The November board is starting to get worried about the actual cost of delivering our little ones in a hospital, and I was hoping you ladies would be willing to either confirm the fears or help calm everyone down. How much of your delivery bill did you have to pay out of pocket for? TIA
Re: Out of pocket cost for delivery?
Mine was about 4K after our crappy self-employed insurance covered their share. The upside is we've almost hit our 5K deductible..lol.
We have an HSA that paid for those costs.
Not too bad all in all. Could be better. Could be worse.
I live in CA and have an HMO and have had to pay $0 out of pocket. It definitely varies greatly depending on insurance. I did receive my hospital statement and the bill was over $12,000 but I wasn't billed for any portion.
Maybe make a call to your insurance and speak to a representative and ask how much they usually cover. Wont get any exact answers but may help give you a guesstimate!
Congrats and wishing you a speedy, safe delivery!
I just added ours up. $2700.64 total out of pocket. Priciest parts were room & board, the epidural, and the MW's fee.
November babies have an advantage since moms are pregnant and will give birth all in the same calendar year. I had a July baby, so we got hit with a 2010 AND 2011 deductible.
There's a thread on the July '11 about this right now. [Link]

It really really depends on your insurance. And how much your doctor and hospital charges. And whether you get a c-section, or an epidural, etc.
That being said, I have a pretty high deductible of 2,500, and an out of pocket max of 3,000, at which point insurance pays 100%. So I paid 3,000, there's basically no way it would have been cheaper. And there's no way it would have been more! The nice thing is that now I've hit my max for the year which means every medical thing I do now through next June is covered 100%, including rxs and co-pays. Oh yeah, and there is a healthfund of 1,000 provided to us, so I guess we only paid 2,000 for me.
Also, don't forget that the baby will have their own bills. In my case, she has the same high deductible of 2,500, so we paid the full 1,800 that was billed for her care in the hospital.
I know it seems like a lot and other insurance plans cover more, but we basically don't even pay for our plan, the premium taken out of my husbands check is literally $2 a month. And like I said, I won't be paying for anything else through next June! Also, 2,000 for me and 1,800 for her is much better than the more than 20,000 that was billed!!
We paid $0, but the bill for both LO and me was a combined about $10,000 with no pain meds for delivery and a circumcision for DS.
For all my Dr appts, blood work, and ultrasounds we paid $60 but I don't know what the combined cost was.
We are lucky to have good insurance. Hopefully knowing the cost will help you to determine how much you would pay under your insurance plan.
about 1600 dollars.
I was pretty happy about it. The hospital set up a bill pay for us. So, we pay 120 a month till it is paid off.
Zero. I love living in Canada!
$4,000 just from the hospital
I had a uncomplicated vaj birth with a interthecal (sp?) and only stayed one night in the hosptial...my bills totalled about $7k and we paid $300.00.
Circ was a extra $75 co-pay.

Same here. My insurance covered 100%. I just had to pay a $10 copay for my first office visit to the OB. My bill to the insurance was around $14,000 though. That includes an epidural with a vaginal delivery and no NICU. I called my insurance when I was pregnant and she told me the percentage they would pay but if it weren't 100% paid they would not have been able to tell me how much I would have to pay out of pocket. That depends on your delivery.
