First fall check-in!

I think it's been a while since we've had one of these. What's new with you and your family?

  • M is officially walking now! He's still wobbly, but he can walk all the way across a room. He's fast, too - he practically skipped over walking and is trying to run! I'm going to have trouble keeping up with him soon.

He's also talking a lot more and saying recognizable words. I think he's up to 10 or so words now - mama, dada, dog, up, more, bath, bye bye, yes, and thank you. He also shakes his head for "no," but hasn't said the word yet. DH thinks he also says "duck," but I haven't heard that one yet. It's amazing how fast he learns things -- he only had 3 words one month ago.

  • DD is doing really well. She's amazing with her hands and is starting to reach for me in the mornings when I go to get her and she reaches for any and every object she wants. We started solids this weekend! First oatmeal and the last couple of days she tried avocado. She's still hesitant and isn't woofing anything down, but we're staying patient and hope to move to some other veggies soon. She's definitely interested in eating.

Sleeping has been all over the place lately. Naps are great - but nighttime she can go 8 hours without waking up and then the next night (like, last night) she was up every 2-3 hours wanting to eat. It's exhausting not knowing what she's going to do day to day. I think there's a lot going on in her little brain and I'm hoping once she gets back into her routine at daycare she'll settle into a better sleeping pattern.

  • DS is walking as well! We went over the weekend and got him fitted for some shoes. It was so funny when we first took him out in them. He was looking down and banging his feet like "what the heck are these things?"

He is playing with his toys differently now. He is trying to put things in and trying to put stuff together as opposed to just taking them apart.

He is such a jokester and is always laughing and smiling. No words beyond momma and dadda, but his babbling is getting more conversational.

  • LO is amazing. It astonishes me to see how much he can learn in such a short time.

He is a pro at army crawling now, and knows how to lift his tummy up and crawl for real, but prefers slithering along the floor. He does laps around the dining room table, which is so funny. On Monday, though, he figured out how to go under the dining room table to get back to the window and the dirty rug under it. Oops. He is also incredibly curious about anything, especially power cords.

Right at the same time he figured out how to lift his tummy off the ground, he started to try to pull up. So far, he can't get all the way to standing without a teeny boost, but in one day he went from looking at the step while sitting, to reaching for it, bouncing from his butt to his knees, then from his knees to his feet while crouched. He LOVES to stand on the couch holding onto the back and looking out the window. I came home yesterday and saw the sweetest little face staring out the window at me as I walked up to the house.

We're still working on solids. He eats 1-2 times a day, but just a tiny bit each time. We're supposed to start finger foods soon according to all of the emails I get about milestones so I need to figure that out.

  • My LO is amazing-- she just knows more and more words everyday! Its really cutting down on the frustrations that we were having about 6 months ago! Basically the biggest change for our family is moving to Chicago at the end of the month. I really don't remember our move here from Denver 5 years ago being this stressful. But I guess you throw a baby and cat in the mix and there you go.

This pregnancy is progressing great! I even found a new OB in Chicago despite initially not being accepted because I was "already pregnant." But thats another story...

As a side note, I just want to say thank you to this board. I have gotten great advice (daycare, babies and misc.) and hope I don't have to get booted out because I am in a new city!

  • I'm jealous of those whose babies are talking.  Sprout has some signs but he uses them in ways that aren't intuitive to the husband & I all the time (like, he'll sign "finished" but what he's really meaning is "the peaches are all gone", not "i'm finished & ready to get up."  He'll also use "finished" in the "i'm done" way too...not only in the high chair, but in the stroller, car seat, playing with a toy. "more" sometimes means "more peaches" and other times means "I want whatever i'm pointing at").  lots of frustration all around these days with communication.  i mean, it's kind of interesting how he uses the signs, but still frustrating as we all bumble along together.  he has definite ideas of what he wants to have happen, but just can't express them!  poor chap.

overall, he's really independent.  i'm beginning to see the logic behind those baby harness-leash things.  he'll just run, run, run far away from us without looking back & it'll happen in a flash!

  • J turned two last week. TWO! I still can't believe it. He was really great at his birthday party this weekend--never got overwhelmed by all the people, just had a blast. He's definitely getting less shy in social situations--he used to need more of an adjustment period.

He just moved up to the older kids (2-3 year olds) class in his daycare and seems to be adjusting well. He recognizes about half of the alphabet now (he knew that Q was for "queen"! That blew my mind) and I've lost track of how many words he has but he is really talkative.

He's also getting more adventurous with his eating. Last week he chowed down on a pesto/pea/orzo/shrimp dish, and a chicken curry. But I felt bad when I had him try crack dip and he said "It hurts!" Oops.

Our only issue lately is bedtime. Whether we put him down at 6:30 or 7:00, doesn't seem to matter, he still takes an hour or so to fall asleep. But at least he's mostly stopped with the pre-6:00 wakeups.

If you're bored, here's an (I think) hilarious video of him "racing" around our house last week.

  • DD#1 is doing well and conversing more and more. It's funny to hear her saying phrases that I say to her like, "Hold on. I'm busy right now." or "I'm thinking about it." or "I'm going downstairs. I'll be right back, okay?" or "Oh my goodness." She is pretty much potty trained except that she only likes to poop at the DCP's house. Over the three day weekend, she only had one tiny poop in her diaper at naptime but otherwise, she would not go poop at our house. Then yesterday as soon as she got to the DCP's house, the DCP said she did a poop that was a foot long and then after lunch she did another poop that was a foot long. My poor DD was holding that in the whole 3 day weekend. So, we have to work on that.

DD#2 is the sweetest smiley baby. We started putting her to bed at 7pm which has worked really well and has eliminated the fussy period she used to have around 8pm. So, thank you everyone for that advice. She's still waking up once a night screaming for food so I'm just feeding her and hoping that eventually she'll stop doing that wake-up. She aggressively plays on her little play gym by grabbing the toys, kicking and arching her back up.

Yes, you'll always be welcome here. I agree about this board. The women here are a wonderful support system.

  • DD is doing better at pre-school.  We had a rough adjustment period this summer, but she seems to like the school and her teachers and classmates, she just doesn't like separating from us.  She'll be 2.5 next week and she is fully into the terrible twos.  I feel like there is at least one time out every day and she is constantly checking and pushing on boundaries.  That said, it is so much fun to talk to her and amazing to learn what is going on in that pretty little head of hers.   DDs eating has gotten really picky lately.  She won't even try things on her plate that she doesn't immediately identify with.  We joke that her food groups are milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, sausage and berries.  Breakfast for dinner is very popular.

DS is a man on a mission.  We've been crawling for almost 3 months now (still prefers army to traditional crawling) and he can get anywhere, fast.  In the last month he learned to climb stairs, cruise on the furniture, and will walk (very wobbly) holding onto our hands.  He is never happy sitting in place, he always wants to move.  He really is DD's opposite.  She's content to sit and play puzzles or read books for hours.  His eating is pretty good, he definitely wants a more active role than being spoon fed so we have been switching to finger foods which he just loves to both eat and play with.

I feel like we are in the wonder years.  It's amazing to see these little ones change and grow.  I just want to bottle up the memories and hold them sacred.

Oh yeah, we just started time outs with J. He has a MONSTER pout while we do it, but it does seem to help him calm down and regroup.

  • T is full on into a MINE! phase right now.  She sees a kid playing with a toy that was completely uninteresting a second ago and decides it's hers and the other kid can't play with it.  It made for some uncomfortable moments at the library and playground over the weekend.

She's also coming to me for every hurt to get kisses.  I almost think I shouldn't have started kissing booboos because she comes to me for the smallest little thing that can't really hurt.  Today she said "Ow, my head" going into daycare, and I think it was because a raindrop landed on her.

One shining moment for my picky little eater who won't try new things and decides half the foods she once tried and liked are horrible.  I gave her pita and hummus for lunch on Monday and she not only liked it but by the end was saying "more hummus, yay!" while I got her some more.  I'm thrilled to find something besides carbs, fruit and milk or cheese that she likes.  (Bonus points that she likes the super-garlicky hummus we get from a little dive we like in our old neighborhood.)

  • I can't believe DD will be 4 months old tomorrow! Where has the time gone? I can't believe it is already September.

Anyways, DD is doing great. This is my third week back at work and daycare is working out really well so far. We are still tweaking our morning routine to get everyone out the door in a timely fashion, but it's really not that bad. My biggest issue is the number of bags, plus the carseat that I need to get from the house to the car. I totally get how people will say they feel like a bag lady.

DD is smiling and making more and more noise. She loves her bath and splashes everywhere.  She still has turned over yet, but I think it is coming soon. She has gotten up on her side and stayed there but has gone all the way over yet.

Hahaha...I only laugh because we've been there.

DD started back at preschool, this time five days a week.  I can already tell the routine will be great for all of us.  She's excited to be back, and I lovelovelove her teacher and school.  We went to Assateague last weekend, and she was in heaven with both the beach and the horses...too bad it's such a long drive from DC or she'd insist we go all the time.

DS turns two in two weeks.  He's been eating as much as I am at meals, and his face looks thinner and older lately...in the midst of a growth spurt?  Also, he's finally showing interest in expanding his vocabulary.  There are new words every day, and he seems excited about his new skills.  He has understood everything going on around him for months, and he's so observational and constantly pointing at things...now he can use words for objects and concepts.  And he can suddenly name like half the alphabet when he sees letters - that blew my mind.  He's more of an outright tantrum-er than DD was, so I've been implementing timeouts when he acts inappropriately or doesn't cooperate (like with clean-up time at night).  They do the trick; he always comes out of them in a good mood and willing to do whatever we'd initially asked of him.  Fingers crossed they're effective for a while longer.

I find myself wondering if #3 a boy or a girl much more than I thought I would...hopefully the surprise at the end is worth all the obsessing I'm doing now.  We're currently trying to figure out our gameplan for if I go into labor before my mom gets here from Connecticut.  There's no one we can easily call on to watch DD and DS, so we're stressing a bit.  DH and I were scheduled to have another name discussion this past weekend (our first since July 9th), but he's been working so much that it's been delayed.  I posted on Facebook that I'm going to just name the kid "Voldemort" (aka, "(S)he Who Shall Not Be Named") because that's what it's going to come down to.

  • Two year molars are ruining my life. That is all.
  • It is really fun having conversations with DD about random things and it is cute the stuff she notices like, 'daddy likes football. do you like football?' Also, I woke up in the middle of the night to hear her singing 'itsy bitsy spider' over the monitor and it was super sweet.

Potty training was a total nightmare but now that we have stopped bothering her, she seems to be doing great. She has had no accidents at daycare and has woken up in the middle of the night to go (probably since she holds it for most of the evening!)

otherwise, all is well in our household.

  • H is crawling around like a fiend! She started right before turning 8 months (and our beach vacation) so life is a bit more difficult keeping her contained. :) And we've also had a few bumps of the noggin so I suppose I need to start babyproofing the house. She's pulling up on things now, and babbling all the time. No teeth yet, but I swear one is going to come through soon with her recent chomping on everything.

  • Things are busy around here.  DS potty trained this weekend.  So far that has gone great and I'm hoping we don't encounter much regression in February when his baby brother arrives. He also starts preschool tomorrow.  I'm a bit sad to give up that time with him, but he'll love it.  It's also great that I'll have that time to get things done since I have been pretty busy lately with portrait sessions and montages.  It's hard to work from home without child care.

Baby #2 is doing well.  I was on bedrest for 3 weeks due to a subchorionic hemorrhage (SCH), so that was a real bummer and very challenging on our whole family, but it's now almost completely gone and we are super relieved.  We have been slowly getting things organized, figuring out what purchases we need to make, and generally how we will make things work efficiently in our townhouse.

Looking forward to lots of Fall adventures (here's hoping all this rain will bring us some long-lasting, gorgeous colors!).

  • DD is 2.5 now.  Time flies.

It's amazing that she is starting to remember things, and tell stories.  In the last 6 months, she's really started to verbalize sooo much more... in real, understandable sentences.

She loves to climb around on everything, and she loves to draw.  Today at daycare, she was practicing writing "A"s and "B"s on a letter worksheet.  She knows all of her colors, can count to like 15, and can name all of the shapes.  Sometimes, she'll see a random object, and tell me what shape it is - the other day, she pointed at the stair, and said "look mommy!  it's a rectangle!"

  • DD hit 10 months old on Saturday! Fastest "school year" ever. She FINALLY started crawling two weeks ago and is still pretty slow. I haven't decided if she just seems slow b/c compared to a 3.5 year old she is, or if she is slow for a crawler. She just started pulling up on a few things this week, and loves to walk around while holding our hands, so I am hopeful that she might walk by 12ish months despite being a later crawler. Verbally, she is up to three words and four signs, so that definitely is her strength.

DS starts preschool next Tuesday and he is actually excited about it, so I hope he won't have too many tears. I am starting to think that we might want to find some sort of children's theater program or something b/c his imagination is kind of insanely huge compared with his friends, and he has taken to creating songs and plays to put on for us. Perhaps finding more kids like him will encourage him to finally engage them instead of parallel play beside them. He doesn't like to play directly with other kids b/c they "don't play right". Probably b/c they get bored pretending to be a train/ATV/dinosaur after a 10 minutes, LOL.
