How far away is the hospital?

So I know it's early, but I decided after I had DS, that I wanted to change doctors for my next pregnancy. I decided to go with a midwife and she delivers at a hospital that fits my needs PERFECTLY. The only problem? It's 45 mins away. The other hospital is 25-30 mins. I don't know what I'm going to do. How far away is the hospital you will deliver at?

Re: How far away is the hospital?

  • There is a hospital in town, less than a mile from my house.  Unfortunately, they are a rinky-dink country hospital with a sky high (30%!) c/s rate.  I am thinking about delivering in Salt Lake City, which is about a 3 hour drive from here.  45 minutes is cake.

  • My hospital is 10 minutes away.

If you're deciding between a 30 minute drive and a 45 minute drive, that's not much of a difference.  I'd say go for it if you are more comfortable there!

  • Mine is about a half hour away.

  • This was actually something that I found really important and was in my list of factors in finding a doctor.

The hospital I will go to is .4 miles away, about a 2 minute drive once you hop in the car.

I got pretty lucky though.  There are 3 very reputable hospitals and many clinics within 3 miles.

  • Mines about 25.  I don't think 45 mins is far at all.  I would most certainly go with that one if it fits your needs better.

  • I had my son at a birth center that was about 45 minutes from my house. I've moved since then, but the birth center is still about the same distance. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go there for baby 2 as well.
  • 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. It's on my way to work, so it's not really a long drive for me.

  • 15-20 minutes...I have one that is right around the corner but I am choosing a better hospital! I've changed all of my doctors to be in this different area.

  • I'm about 45-60 minutes away from the birth center we would like to use.  If we need to go to a hospital, the one I would prefer is an hour away with no traffic, almost 2 with.

  • 15 minutes away.

Luckily in case of an emergency situation or if something should arise and I can't get there, there are 4 other hospitals in my surrounding area.

    1st BFP- March 2011. Natural MC @ 8 weeks
2nd BFP- July 2011.  Chemical Pregnancy
3rd BFP- Sep 2011. My beautiful son was born May 2012.
    4th BFP-August 2014- Due May 12, 2015

  • 3 blocks. Actually when we bought our house my brother said, "This is convienent. When you have a baby you can just walk to the hospital to give birth." LOL

  • Any hospital for me is at least 45 minutes or longer. With DD I did go with the closest being 45 minutes. But that is not why I chose there. It was recommended. The only thing I hated about the long drive was during labour I could not sit down I had to stand through the whole thing...a drive was the worst pain of it all!

  • My hospital is only about 15 minutes away.  Maybe less depending on traffic.  This hospital is one of the best in the area so I'm pretty excited about delivering there.

  • I live about 5 minutes away from a hospital, but I would never have a baby there. Where I had DS is about 20-30 minutes away. I'm having this baby at home, though.

  • It depends on how fast your labor goes.... did you have a quick labor with DS? Will you have a scheduled c-section? My labor for DD was 8 hours, so I assume this next one might come even more quickly. I wouldn't want to be so far away from the hospital, just in case this one makes a quick entrance.

  • 20-45 mins, depending on time of day and traffic.?

There is a hospital that is much closer, 5-10 mins, but I prefer to be at the bigger hospital that has a state of the art NICU available if needed.?

  • Mine is less than 10 minutes but I am in the city.

I would say go with the 45 minute away one though.  It is only a difference of 15 minutes in the car, and when you think about it, you'll be spending much longer in the hospital.  So it's probably better to chose the best one :)

  • It is less than half a mile. I could ride my bike there when I go into labor (but won't)!

  • About 20 minutes away...similar to PP, there is one about 10 minutes away, but it will be totally worth the extra 10 minutes to get to the best hospital in the area!
  • The way DH drives we could make it in maybe 5.  But its 10-15 min away.  My best friend had both of her kids there and she LOVED it.
  • About 15 - 20 minutes.  But the hospital closest to my OB's office (where they used to do deliveries) is closer to a half hour, 40 minutes away, but I was okay with that because I've been going to my OB forever so I am comfortable with them. But they have switched hospitals so they're actually closer, which I like obviously.

  • Well, the hospital I'll be delivering at is about 35-40 mins away.  However, I actually live about 5 minutes from the nearest hospitol. DH gave me a really hard time when I told him we weren't going to that one. I love my midwives though and have to go where they are.

  • We're choosing between 2 as well.   One is 20 minutes, but the nicer one is about 30-35.  The further one is a bit nicer and has a more specialized labor and delivery department.  As my dr put it "babies are what they do".  I think we'll probably go with the farther one for that reason.

  • The hospital is 45 minutes away.  Which isn't what I wanted, and I'm not in love with the idea of being in that hospital again (I had DD there too).  But none of the dr's closer would allow children at the appointments, and I don't have any choice but to bring her.  So it wasn't really an option.

I'll be set up for a scheduled c-section.  But I went into labor with DD early and had a c-section a week before my scheduled section.  So I'd like to say that having a scheduled c will mean it doesn't matter about the drive...it still totally sucks because the scheduled means nothing.

  • mine is 1 hour. it didn't really matter with my first...just felt like a LONG drive with contractions! But I was most worried about a snow storm which there were many in late Jan..but we got lucky...so with it being May it should be a quick drive! unless we get another late snow storm like last year!

I think it's worth the drive for a better facility and a doctor u trust!!
