  • None until three years but we tested positive on the RAST for both of them. Hoping he grows out of it bc I am addicted to PB and I can't imagine him never being able to experience its' greatness.

    What is the RAST?

  • wow, it's too late for us. i never ever heard from our pedi to even be cautious about anything besides honey. he's been eating pb for months now.

i also want to know, what is the rast?

  • Ours gave us the okay for both at his 12 month appointment. He accidentally had crab around 9 months anyway (my mom thought it was just queso dip). From my understanding, most pedis have gotten away from withholding foods so long (unless of course there is an allergy history or something) because current research isn't really showing that it makes a difference.

  • Yep. Because food allergies run in our family.  And our pedi was right... turns out DS is allergic to peanuts and walnuts.
  • No to PB, DS has been eating it for a few months.  Shellfish is a different story, but that's because I'm allergic to it.  We've been told to keep him from that until we can get him in for allergy testing, which we will wait until he is around 3 for.

  • My pedi gave the clearance for everything at his 12 month appointment (she just said avoid choking hazards like peanuts, popcorn, etc.).  They always stay on top of the latest research and even gave me paperwork that explained the new research about allergies in kids to show me where they were getting their info.

ETA:  Neither DH nor I have allergies to any foods and they don't run in our family so while it is a possibility for him to have an allergy it's not likely.

  • Our pedi said both were fine at a year

  • nah, DD had PB around 7 months and mussels at 11 or 12 months (just cuzz I didn't make them sooner).  The American Pediatric Assoc. has said that delay is inappropriate unless there is a strong family history of allergies.

  • If you don't have any history of allergies I would go ahead and try it at a year.  We are waiting until 2 for pb b/c of family history.

Just b/c your pedi says something that doesn't make it absolute

  • Mine said 2. There are no food allergies in our families, but  I don't see it as a big deal to wait, there are so many other foods LO's can eat.
  • I have given both well before 1 year.  I think the pedi said wait till one year, but to be honest I ignore most of that stuff.  I do my own research and I felt it wasn't a risk.

  • Our pedi said no PB until 2.

I opted not to listen to this outdated guidance. She was a military doc and was required to recommend a blanket statement. Even she agreed (without actually saying it outloud...her eyes said it all) and said that their recs would soon be changing for kids with no family history of food allergies.....but at that moment, he couldn't say anything other than "No PB until 2."

DS eats PB every day and LOVES it. :)

  • Our pedi gave us the go ahead at 1 year since no one in our families have food allergies.  DD has refused to eat peanut butter and eggs until about a month ago and then broke out in a rash with both of them.  Lucky us, DD had the blood test and is allergic to peanuts and eggs.  The scratch test also confirmed garlic and grapefruit...go figure.

  • No, which is good because DD loves shrimp and eats PB pretty much every day.

  • Nope.  DD got PB before turning 1 and has had all sorts of fish and shellfish.  We have absolutley no allergies in my family and I eat a ton of fish/shellfish so DD was bound to have it pretty early.
