Success after IF

How much is your monthly mortgage payment?

I always thought ours was high, but I recently read an article that said your monthly mortgage payment should be no more than 28% of your gross monthly income...and ours is below that.  So, I guess it's not as high as I thought.  Just wondering what's average.
[Poll]
Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.
LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).

Re: How much is your monthly mortgage payment?

  • Our mortgage payment is about 9% of our gross monthly income (15% of our net monthly income).

  • Our jumped substantially when we refinanced a few years ago.  Our rate went down, but we switched from a 30 year to 15 year.  And I pay double on principle at least 3 times a year.

  • My monthly mortgage payment is just under 1000 bucks (we re-financed a couple years ago and shaved over 300 dollars a month off that bad boy) BUT my property taxes add another 400 dollars a month (an amount predicted to go even higher in the near future - UGH) to that payment.

We have a great fixed interest rate and very reasonable mortgage payment these days but having skyrocketing property taxes to pay with the same check every month makes it feel like it's a payment that continues to go up .... while our incomes stay static.  Not the greatest equation... I hate grown up stuff ... where's my winning powerball ticket?

    Wheee!

Our taxes are insane - almost $1000/month and a VERY significant portion of our mortgage (but I included the total payment - taxes included - when I voted in the poll above...not sure if that was the intention). Sucks living in a HCOL area and one of the reasons DH wants to move.

Crap, I didn't even think about taxes!  Ours are included in our mortgage payment too...is that pretty common?  If so, maybe we can assume that most of the answers included property taxes.

  • Ours is 26% of our net but that includes taxes and insurance as well. I wish it was less but we have a 20 yr mortgage at a great rate that will be paid off before the kids start college, so I can't complain too much. We needed a larger house, we wanted a better school system in a smaller town, and we spend frugally in other areas, so the extra expense for housing was worth it to us.

Seriously - property taxes are what kill me - mine are estimated to go up anywhere from 200 - 350 dollars a month in next 4 years (thank you BAZILLION dollar new high school and crap PA budget that eviscerated education line) - and I don't know if we can swing it, truly.  It's like having a bad, adjustable rate mortgage basically - even though actually we have a great, fixed rate, supposedly affordable mortgage.  BLEAHHHH!!!

  • It will end up being between 15 and 20% of our gross income. Ugh.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Ours is about 9% of our gross monthly income (including taxes and insurance). But that is about to go up dramatically as we just bought another house and cannot sell our current one because we are underwater. We are hoping to rent our current house. (Not that you asked for all of that additional info! Sorry)
  • Ours is about 22% of our income, including property taxes and home insurance.  Our property taxes aren't nearly as high here as other places.  But we have super high sales tax.

  • ETA: we are at 23% of our income with mortgage/taxes combined. Gotta love NJ! We def bought at the height of the market.

  • these posts always depress me because we live in such a hcol area. our mortgage/taxes are about 10% of our net monthly income right now, which allows us to save a lot. we have been passively looking to move to a bigger house but the taxes around here are really prohibitive so that has been holding us back.

  • I live in a super HCOL area, so am outside the "norm" it appears based on the poll.

ETA: Oh wait, you live in New England too, so maybe yours is more in tune with mine as far as monthly payment goes.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!

  • Our total monthly mortgage payment (including taxes and insurance) is 21% of of our net monthly income (like 15% of gross).
  • Since I have been working and adding  to the family finances, our mortgage, taxes and homeowner's insurance adds to a total payment that is 25% of our Gross. I don't want to think about what percent of our net it is, and I can not even bring myself to see what percent it was before I started working again. We are in a middle of the road COL area, but DH and I both also pursued careers that will never make us wealthy..... just ok!
  • After a job change since we purchased the home, our monthly mortgage, PMI, and escrowed taxes/insurance, our is 30% of our gross. YIKES!

  • Mine is around 22% gross, 32% net (including taxes and insurance).  Although with the move we just did our mortgage is actually lower than what we were paying in VA, the taxes in NJ are killing us - over $1000/month (OUCH) - so our mortgage payment is almost $600/month more than before.  Sigh.  I may end up going back to work full-time sooner than I wanted...

  • Ours is 13% of our gross monthly income.  We refinanced a couple of years ago and got rid of our second mortgage, lowered our rate significantly and dropped about $500 off our monthly payment.  :)

ETA - Our monthly mortgage includes our property taxes and homeowners insurance.

  • Which mortgage? lol... We have a house for sale (was a rental) and our house that we live in. I answered for the house that we live in. Ours is on the lower end of that scale, but that does not include our taxes or insurance. If I included that taxes and ins., it would be more towards the middle ranges

ditto this but mortgage is double that. If we moved to westchester with better schools, taxes would be $10k + :(

    The taxes really kill us!!!!

  • My mortgage itself (like LisaandBryan said) isn't the issue, it is the property taxes. My mortgage is only 750 a month but we put over 50% of the cost of the house down. Our taxes a year are almost 9K.

  • HOLY MOLY.  Taxes are insane for you all on the east coast.

    I am in SHOCK.

Our mortgage is on the high end of the $$ scale, but we knew that when we bought our "forever house" ... It's a lot... I just did the math... and it's not pretty. Including taxes and insurance it is 16% of our gross... yikes. Of course we have low (?) property taxes out here and no state income tax....

and the trade off is that our schools SUCK our roads are bad and we have high unemployment.  Sad

  • Wow! I can't even fathom that some of you are paying over $1000/month for property taxes!  I'm Canadian and live in a high tax area and we pay $3000/year - $250/month.  It is crazy to see the differences by area.

  • Yep, it's very expensive living in the metro NYC area.  I kind of chuckled that this poll topped out at $3000+.

Our taxes are VERY high here, but, we also live in a town with one of the best school systems in the state, so, we were very willing to pay them.  But, I pray all the time that they don't come in and reassess us because I don't want them to go higher!

Before moving to this house, we lived in a townhouse with almost no land and I was paying over $9000 a year in taxes.....in a town with a mediocre school system!  Now that, I thought, was ridiculous!
