Is the ottoman necessary with a glider?

Hello Ladies!

I'm looking for some help from 2+ times mammas with this question. Is is necessary to get the ottoman with the gilder for the baby's room? I am planning to nurse and I don't know if having your feet up helps make you more comfortable or if it helps the milk flow? I'm not sure if this even makes sense. haha!

DH and I finally found a chair that we like in a color that will work in our LO's room but the ottoman is not for sale right now. I mean I could always get some of those "nursing stools" that I've seen at BRU and on-line at amazon for like $30 just to have it to use if it does indeed make it easier.

TIA for the help! :o)

Re: Is the ottoman necessary with a glider?

  • We didn't get the ottoman for our glider, and I have never regretted it. From my experience nannying, I always thought that it just took up space in the baby's room and was one more thing for a mobile baby to get into/climb on.

  • I was wondering about this too. I am guessing it might be better if you are shorter (like me) -- like it could be a little more comfortable to have something to prop your legs up on. But I would probably go with the cheaper item that just matches it, if you get one -- that's what I plan to do.

  • I sort of debated about this too because I think with a glider, it's more comfortable for me to rock with my feet extended than down on the floor but at $150 for the matching ottoman...I decided I didn't need it that bad!  Instead, we're getting one of those "leather" covered storage cubes/ottomans from Target for me to have something to rest my feet on and sort of push off of to rock.  Plus..we need all the storage we can get!

  • I have one of the nursing stools and personally I love it.  I'm not sure I would like having nothing to put my feet on though.... the chair is a little too high for me to be able to put my feet comfortably on the ground.  The glider ottoman was too expensive for us, and I agree with the PP who said it does kinda get in the way and pose a bit of a hazard when baby is mobile :)

  • I LOVE my ottoman.  My DS is almost 2 and I still rock him for a few minutes while we read stories every night, and I like having my feet up.

  • We have a gliding ottoman that matches our upholstered glider-- I love it. I loved putting my feet up while, nursing & rocking and it was especially comfortable when my feet were incredibly swollen the first few weeks after delibvery from the IV fluids.

I found out quickly that we spent more time in the living room than in the baby's room, so I had it reupholstered to match our living room furniture and it's the most comfortable chair in our house!

We actually bought a second upholstered gilder and ottoman off of craigslist to put in the nursery-- we didn't spend much time in there when DS1 was really little, but we spend more time in there (reading, etc) as part of our nighttime routine now (DS1 turns one in two weeks).

  • If you've got room for it in the nursery I'd definitely get one.

  • I think it depends on how tall you are and how tall your chair is and everything. If you are short and can't put your feet on the ground you will probably want something to put your feet on whether it be a stool or the ottoman. However, if you are tall and can put your feet on the ground it probably wouldn't be as necessary. I personally am very short so my feet never reach the ground in any chair and it is very difficult to hold a child and rock with my feet dangling.

  • Well they are definitely nice to have but you can get by without one.

  • I'm not a 2nd x mom, but I am having my glider delivered on Saturday. We decided against the ottoman.  First of all, it takes up so much more room in a room that is NOT that huge to begin with.  Secondly, the glider we got ended up being a recliner/glider, so it would be silly to have another piece for your feet.  Finally, when we were in the store trying them out, the sales person actually pointed out that most people say they find it more comfortable to BF while sitting up, not "lounging back."  May be personal advice or opinion, but I agreed.  We can always do what PP said and go to get the leather bound storage container at Target if we decide later we want/need it.

  • To me, being able to rock with my feet up is so nice that I wouldn't have purchasd my glider if it didn't have a matching ottoman.  In being around my neices and nephews there is a huge difference trying to rock with them in an upholsered chair with no ottoman versus one with an ottoman.

  • Not necessary, but you may wish you had it at some point.  Helps give your back some release.

Yup, this. I could do without it, but I found it just a tad more relaxing to prop my feet up while I sat with him.

  • We have one in DD's room and we didn't get one with this baby's chair.

I've found it sort of hard to rock the chair with my legs on the ottoman.  It's kind of comfy to put your feet up and lean back while holding DD, but neither DH nor I thought it was worth getting one this time around.  We'll get one of those nursing stools.

  • My ottoman came with the glider and we now use it to hold stuffed animals.  My sister gave me her nursing stool and I used that when I nursed.  Afterwards, we didn't use anything.

Personally, the glider and ottoman made me slightly seasick.
