School Pictures

I just had my first sticker shock of the school year, the cheapest package was $90.  I could order a single picture for $35.  Totally ridiculous.  DD's pre-school is attached to a private school, I feel for those parents of school age kids.  Here's hoping Ffx County is less expensive for elementary school or I am in for some pricy portraits over the years...

Re: School Pictures

  • I taught elementary before becoming a WAHM with DS.  I was always shocked to see the ridic prices of photo packages that the kids took home to ask their parents for (even in South Central L.A.! C'mon people...).  They charged the most for the class pic because as kids get older that's what they beg their parents for.

Sad thing was, some companies send ALL the photos (not just a proof) home with their kids along with a payment form, and if they don't buy them, they must return them to me and I had to send them back in so they could get thrown out.  They do this even here in Arlington!  :(  I hated calling the kids over to return their photos.  Some were almost in tears.  Some of my kids had NO photos of themselves because their parents couldn't afford cameras and I always wished I could buy their families' photos.  Ironically, I am now a childrens' photographer and I realize two things: 1) what a shame it is that families aren't given a fair price for their photos, and 2) how terrible those school 'portraits' really were!  Low quality, poor set-up and awkward posing, fake backdrop, etc that I am amazed they cost what they did!  ::rant over:: and I don't blame you for sticker shock!!

  • My DH has so far just given in and bought the ($$$) photos that DD #1's school had - but now that I have two in that school - hmmmm.... I'm not sure I want to do that!  We would buy the package and send some to the (8) grandparents, but really, do they really do anything with them?  I don't even like most of my in-laws.  And I have a drawer full of extra wallet sized ones that were basically a waste of money since they're in a drawer.

I think the company the school uses does have an option to just buy a digital version.  I'll have to see.  That's more practical since we tend to do Shutterfly photo gifts for the grandparents at Xmas.

    Something to think about...

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • The digital version at our school is $125.  They do however take that one photo and put it in B&W and Sepia as well.  Total bargain.

Mama Angelica that makes me really angry.  I feel for those children who don't have pictures.  That's so sad they have no way to hold onto their childhood image of themselves.  That would make such a wonderful service project for high school photography students.

We're doing family portraits in two weeks.  That will more than suffice for this fall.
