Internal Exams...vent

So I went for my weekly OB appt today I'm 39w5d  due Saturday- my MW didn't want to do an internal and it sort of bothered me.  Last week I had a false alarm and I was 1 cm, and today I told her about my werid cramps and BH's and how I couldnt sleep at all last night because of cramping.  But she said she doesnt feel like an internal would tell anything and she doesnt like doing them unless absolutley necessary...has this happened to anyone else?

I'm sort of bummed I was hoping I could see if I have progressed at all....

  • I have been getting them, due the same day as you, and I plan to decline this week. All they've done for me so far is screw with my head, and honestly what they tell you is meaningless. You could be dilated for weeks, or be locked up tight and go into labor tomorrow.

  • I've had 0 progress of any sort. Mostly they just hurt me and feel like my doctor is trying to get at my gag reflex.

  • I had them every week from 35 on with DD1 and they always showed 0 progress, which just discouraged me. This time, my doctor won't do them unless they have reason to suspect there's a problem, or if they want to check how favorable the cervix is for induction. I like it better this way - I'd rather not be discouraged by 0 progress over and over again or hopeful over 1 cm just to stay pregnant for weeks longer.

  • MY MW has never done one, in my false alarm last week another MW checked, as they thought my water broke.  i'm a FTM, my friends who have had kids all said they get checked every week which is why i probably thought it wasn't normal NOT to have them at all...I feel better now knowing its okay not to have it....

    thanks guys :)

  • I was checked for the first time since a scare around 25wks at 36wks. I was only checked because we were discussing induction. I was not checked the next week when we set the date and time for the induction(which is tonight at 8pm ahhhh) The doctor just assumed I was still around 2-3cm.

  • Curious to know WHY she doesnt like doing them? Did you ask?

  • She said it doesnt show anything that helps her know if I'm ready to go, and its uncomfortable for me so why put me through it. She only does one if its medically necessary....

so true! i had one the day before i gave birth to my first. was still at 1cm (noon), my water broke at 4am and he was born at 12:49pm the next day. Smile

  • And that's what I've heard too, that the internals help things get moving if they aren't already...Patience is a virtue I guess...LOL

i think that some don't like doing it because it can introduce bacteria in to the birth canal.

  • You should feel happy that she's not doing unnecessary procedures on you! I've declined all my MWs offers for internals. She said most women don't want them, but a few do, so she always asks.

The results don't tell you anything. They don't predict when you're going into labor or how close you are. Everybody is different. Also, every time something foreign is introduced into your vagina, you're at risk for infection. Again, not necessary.

I will personally decline them until I am in labor, and even then that they be kept to a minimum.

But, it's your choice. If you want them done, then ask and insist.

  • Don't do it. Trust me. If you were in my shoes you would regret it. For three weeks straight, right on past my due date, nothing. After last weeks appointment, I left the Dr.'s office and bawled. It was all I could do to get out of there before breaking down. The only time it is really going to be necessary is when I go in tomorrow for my week 41 appointment and we have to decide about induction because you don't want to be induced with an unripe cervix unless absolutely necessary for the babies health.
  • No I know agree that doing it is not the best, I was just told by so many other mom's that they always had them so I thought it was a normal thing that my MW just didnt want to do.  I think at this point I'm just more worried about being induced then anything else....I really wanted to have a med free birth....but obviously I have to do whats best for my LO...

thanks for all the advice ladies :)

  • I assumed they were standard and was surprised when my MW said she really doesn't do them unless we ask for them.  I asked at my 37 week and she happily did it for me but only because I asked.

Again, they don't necessarily mean anything and can just mess with your head.
