Trouble TTC

How did you pick your RE?

We have our first RE on Sept 12. I got to thinking today, I sure hope I like this guy and maybe I should have done more research of my own. We were referred by my OB so I just trusted that this is where we should go. How did all of you decide on an RE? Were you referred? Is there anything in specific that if they do or say we should run far away and find a different RE?

Re: How did you pick your RE?

  • My OB gave me a few (I think 3?) recommendations so I took those and googled and decided on the practice based on reviews/location. I then asked for the specific dr. my ob suggested within that practice.

  • My OB gave me three.  Of those, two were approved by insurance.  I then looked at their websites, locations, and if they allowed DH to do his S/A at home.  Sadly, that is what really sinched the deal but I was leaning that way anyway.

  • I was looking at three different practices. I chose the one we ended up going with because it was smaller, so even if I didn't see my own RE, I will know the doctor I am seeing. I also wanted to know that my RE (or one of her partners) would do all monitoring and procedures. Some clinics have technicians do ultrasounds and nurses to IUIs. I like to talk to my doctor. A lot. So I wanted to see them at every visit. And what sealed the deal for us was the fact that since our clinic is at the university, the pharmacy gets meds from the state formulary, so fertility meds were dirt cheap. We saved about $4000 doing IVF with them over any other clinic in town.

But really, you just need to like and trust your doctor.  Good luck with your appointment!

  • I went with my OB/GYN's recommendation but I checked with my local Bump board. They had rave reviews. I also checked on Yelp and other online review sites. Hope that helps!

  • My RE was recommended by my OB. I went with them because my Mom had heard good things about them and mentioned their Center to me before my OB recommended them.

I'm not sure about specifics, but I usually just go with gut instincts, i.e. if it doesn't feel right, then you may not want to go that route.

  • I went with my RE based on recommendations from a friend/co-worker who went there as well as my SIL. One was successful and one was not, but both loved the practice. It also the most well known practice in the area and they accept insurance. The other RE I was looking into does not accept insurance and that played a big part in our decision.

  • I asked a few ladies on another board, researched on my own, and took those names to my OB/GYN.  I listed off the 3 I had and she flat out said "NO" to 2 of them.  She was "ok" with one and when I asked her if she had any suggestions she hardly let me finish the question before telling me one name.  I happen to go with her suggestion and really really like him!

  • My OB/GYN recommended the practice that is affiliated with their hospital and a a friend recommended someone they went to.  I researched both and felt more comfortable with the one my friend recommended.  Decision was based on success rates, doctor reviews and nearness to my home.

  • My OB recommended two practices to me.  I did a little research on both (which are both big name hospitals around here) and ultimately decided based on location and success rates.  My RE is super convenient to work for monitoring appointments.

  • We picked our RE by co-worker and friend referral.  I didn't expect insurance to cover much of anything, so that wasn't a factor.  You'll know after you meet with your RE if he is the one.  There is no reason you can't get a second opinion, if you aren't sure about the RE plan after your consult appt.
  • My RE is my OB's husband...

  • I looked up to see who our insurance would cover, since it covers testing only. Then we met with both and choose the one that best fit our needs. We went with one who is a little more specialized in MFI.

LOL - I guess they are in a win win situation.  If one fails the other gets their business.. ha!   Actually the RE clinic I am going to is a husband and wife I think.

  • I am currently RE shopping. I am moving onto IVF so I looked at sart.org and the CDC and picked the top 2. Sart.org breaks IVF cycles down to age range and dx. I left my current RE for numerous reasons, but started with her as a referral from my OB. Make sure to do your homework! I can not even begin to tell how much better the quality and care I have received at the second place I visited compares to the place I left. GL in your search.

  • My OB recommended 2, but his nurse told me her daughter went to 1 and she said really liked her and things went wonderful for her so I went with the one the nurse directed me too out of the 2. Although I drive an hour and it is kinda getting old...but I just love my RE and the nurses!
