Success after IF

An ambulance ride is EXPENSIVE!

I got a statement in the mail from the hospital I was transferred to in NC.  It says "This is not a bill" What it means is "This is not a bill...YET"

The cost of the 2 hour ambulance ride from the first hospital to the second hospital was $2773.00.

I really hope that I do not have to pay this.

At least the ambulance nurse and the driver let me pick the type of music we could listen to- they were cool guys.  But not $3K cool.  YIKES!!!!!!!

  • That is ridiculous.  When my Dad needed to get ambulances from one hospital to another:

    1.  It was covered by the government's health care

    2.  When you have to pay for an ambulance here it is like $200.

  • Wow that's a ton of $$ I hope that you don't need to pay any of that!

  • Unfortunately that doesn't surprise me at all.  Emergencies are so expensive. :(

Here's to hoping you only have to pay a small fraction of that!  And yay for your healthy little one too. :)

  • Tell me about it!  When I took DS in to the pedi when he had RSV and his oxygen sat levels were super low, they had to call an ambulance to take us to Children's Hospital as they legally could not let us drive the two miles ourselves in case he went into respiratory failure along the way.  The 10 minute ride resulted in a $500 bill.  Insanity.  Insurance covered some of it, but definitely not all.

  • That is INSANE! I agree Emergencies are expensive.

When we have had to use one ( twice) Our "copay" was 500.00

I also remember when Lincoln got sick at  3 weeks old, our hospital originally was going to air-lift him to a children's hospital. The ER Dr. found that our insurance did not cover it at. all. and he then reassessed, and decided that an ambulance with a nurse transport would work... thanks for saving us some dough Dr!.

  • Ouch!  Was is a far drive?  I had to pay about $300 for them to take DH about 4 miles (from one hospital to the next) to have lifesaving surgery and it wasn't covered, I hope yours is!

  • I believe our bill for an ambulance ride earlier this year was around $500-600.  Granted, it was only a 10 minute ride, but still expensive.  Thankfully, insurance covered all of it, but it was still scary to get that bill in the mail directly from HEMSI, until I saw a form on the back I could fill out for insurance purposes.

  • Ambulance rides are ridiculously expensive.  Just got the bill for my son's transfer to a children's hospital in December (uhm, hello?  It's September, why am I just getting this now?).  $517 for a ten minute ride (insurance is covering almost $300 of it though).  I don't mind since he was on so much equipment and his transfer was so touchy but the $117 for mileage pi$$e$ me off.  It's 10 miles!

I'm wondering when the bill for his transfer back to the regular NICU will appear.

  • OMG yikes! That's crazy. Yeah I hear that those rides are expensive and if they airlift you it can be like 50-100k
