How to clean a stuffed animal asap???

DD just got sick ALLLLL over her crib including all over her favorite stuffed animal.  It's a webkinz so it has beans in the body as well as stuffing.  I rinsed all the grossness off of it and it's soaking in hot water in the bathroom sink.....now what?  It stinks to high heavens and has a bit of orange staining on it's chest.  Please don't tell me it's hopeless!!  My brother gave it to her and she loves that thing!!! • I just read this:

If your teddy bear ends up on the floor a lot, then it probably needs a better cleaning then the ones above. There are several options here. First, you can let the plush toy soak overnight with some softener and detergent, then throw them in the dryer for that fresh smell. Or, you can just simply throw them in the washing machine. To keep the toy safe, put it in a pillow case and knot the case closed. Then, so as not to damage the stuffed animal, set the washer on a gentle cycle with cold water, and always make sure you dry it on low. A low heat setting for a half and hour will be plenty for the toy, and then when you take them out, straighten the teddy bear in case any of its stuffing has shifted out of place.

Think that will work or would it ruin the poor thing?

  • As long as the filling is plastic (it should say on the tag), you can put it in the washing machine and dryer. I do it all the time with DD's favorite stuffed lovey.

ETA: I don't even think they make stuffed toys with natural fillings anymore (like crushed walnut shells). I'm sure you'll be fine throwing it in the wash.

  • I don't know anything about webkinz but I'd soak it in oxyclean/warm water.  It sounds like you can't throw it in the washer, because that'd be my first course of action.

The oxyclean will probably get rid of the stains and smell.  You could also try vinegar/water.  You're going to need something other than water to get out the stains/bad smells.

  • I have washed literally hundreds of stuffed animals in the washer, including DD's lovey, which has beans and stuffing.  It works fine.  I have had super cheap ones come apart (think carnival prizes), but in general, they wash well.  I would not soak it too long, it will just absorb more water and be harder to dry.  The pillow case or dedicates bag idea is a good one, especially if it has fluffy fur.
  • Perfect!  Thanks Ladies!  Miss Kitty will be taking a dip in the washer first thing in the morning in a pillow case! Smile

  • I've washed stuffed animals.  I would maybe do it by itself and maybe on delicate.  The dryer may or may not be a good idea depending on the fur.  I will always remember my sister washing my niece's Earnie (from sesame street) doll and putting him in the dryer and he came out with an afro.  Also, I collected troll dolls way back when and occasionally the little ones went through the laundry and their hair would get ruined too.  Short fur doesn't seem to be a problem though.
