Cloth Diapering

Annoyed....Help please.

So, I bought a stash of NB PFs and I JUST prepped them yesterday. I knew they were going to shrink, but I guess I wasn't prepared to how much. They are tiny! 11 x 11. There is no way these would fit even a 7 lb baby with a snappi. Sure, I could put them into a pocket diaper, but I didn't buy pocket diapers...I just bought regular covers. I've seen on websites that you are supposed to fold the diapers and use a snappi, but there is no way. The PFs I got are simply too small. It would maybe fit without any folding up the bottom or folding down the top, they just seem so tiny. I feel like I wasted 100 bux. awesome.

  • The whole point of NB prefolds is that you don't fold over any. You'll be shocked at how small your baby is in the beginning. I'm sure it will work fine - my NB's fit in my bummis XS covers perfectly. I never used a snappi at all - I didn't see the point with the covers I had and a newborn that doesn't really move.

  • Thank you. I think I am just having a freak out moment. I know that when CDing you change as soon as baby is wet, right? I did the 'water' test to make sure my PFs were prepped and absorbent and it absorbs, just is damp. That should be good, right? Do you need to change newborns immediately with disable diapers? I mean, do they generally still stay damp if they are not changed right away? I need to go to a CD class....wonder if I can find one somewhere!! I feel so un-educated about diapering my LO and I only have 2 months to learn!!

  • Yeah, I'd wait to see how they fit before you freak out. You may be surprised.
  • I can't comment on the size of NB diapers but I agree with PP, you will be shocked at how small your newborn is. I didn't have any NB size clothes because I thought there was no way my baby would ever be that small. Everything seemed SO TINY. I ended up having to send my parents out to pick up some NB sized clothes because she actually was that small. So wait and see, you might be surprised. Wink

You shouldn't leave a baby in a really wet diaper, whether it's a sposie or cloth.  But if they pee once, it's fine.  Your instinct will kick in and you'll know when to change LO :o

Most sposies have these little crystals in them that puff up and turn to gel when wet.  Those wick moisture away from baby's skin to keep them feeling dry.  If you want LO to have the "dry feeling" in cloth (prefolds) you can use fleece liners.  Placed between the baby's skin and the prefold.  The moisture will still be soaked into the prefold, but the fleece will create a stay-dry barrier.  Most babies are fine without liners though.

  • As a newborn, my baby pooped so much that I just changed him every time he woke up - about every hour or two. Overnight, we may have pushed it to three hours, but he didn't really sleep that long... so mostly every couple hours. Every chance we got, essentially.

Have you watched the Cloth Diapering 101 on YouTube? It's pretty good for a general explanation if you're more of a visual/audio person.

  • I started with the NB sized prefolds- they were actually too big! My LO was 6#9oz when we got home. I waited a week until I used them. Now, at just over 8#'s I think they 'fit' the way they should- and I am using a snappi!

  • When your LO is a newborn, you will get little sleep and need to set some sort of routine for sanity.  Advice i got on cloth diapering change after every feeding.  They poop and pee a lot.  If you change them before a feeding, they will probably pee/poop while you're feeding so you have to do it all over again.  Don't even go by the clock, i just changed every time.  Expect about 12 changes per day.  Also, you need extras on hand b/c more than once LO will pee while on the changing table too.  :)   I would check around to see if you have a cloth diaper store in your area.  Most do classes.
