Cloth Diapering

Rash help!!

I have mostly MF pockets. DS had a little redness/rash going on this weekend just below belly button. Stopped cloth and tried to strip with just hot water. FAIL. Tried stripping with Dawn Ultra with Bleach Alternative (couldn't find Original for the LIFE of me) and started CDs again last night. Looks like ammonia smell is gone but redness back after about 3 diapers today.

Please help with MF stripping! I think DH is ready to toss my stash out the window with all of the hot water I am using up!

Re: Rash help!!

  • kym, why do you think they need to be stripped? You haven't been using them that long. What detergent are you using? he could be reacting to that. Or he may not like the suede cloth of the BGs (that's what you're using, right?).

Is he a belly sleeper? How high does the rise come on the diapers?

  • They have all of the stripping signs...reeking of ammonia especially after a nighttime pee and the red irritation.

I am using the RNG and I am not a fan but I still have half a container left. I'd like to start Planet but may just go regular Tide so it's easy to get.

He is a belly sleeper. The rash keeps showing up during the day though. It's usually just between his belly and his goods or right around the creases in his groin. Never a true rash...just red and irritated.

If it was the material of the BG's or the RNG, irritation should have shown up before now. He's at the mid rise and the rash is quite below the rise so that's not the irritation.

I also use BacOut on poo diapers before going in the pail but that's not new either. So I feel like all signs point to build up. I don't want to bleach and I read lots of bad things about vinegar in the washing machine and I cannot find Original Dawn. So I feel like I need to strip and start with a new detergent. Or should I just wash with a new detergent and go from there? I am just so flustered!!

  • I should add that I have been using 2 T of RNG in wash....

  • I'm out of suggestions. I can send you some original dawn, if you want.

Also - i've had no problems with vinegar in the washing machine, but i've only done it like 2 times.

  • You would totally know better than me! Wouldn't an irritation to soap or material show before now? I have a few of the Lovely Pockets with different insides but not enough for a full day. I can go with those and Econobums for a day but not sure that would rule anything out.

:( Which soap are you using? What did you do to strip with the vinegar? Did it do the job? It'd be worth the risk if it works!! Sure am not tossing my stash!!

Where did you get original dawn? Maybe I will check Amazon real quick!!

I would increase to 3T and see if that helps. I think the rash might be ammonia residue from not using enough detergent. ETA: do you use a front or top loader? That might change my suggestion. I use 3T with my top loader, but less when using a front loader.

  • So you think I don't need to strip but just do a good wash with 3 T of RNG? I have a top loader...

If it's as simple as that, I'd be so happy!!

  • Ok! I rewashed all of my diapers using more RNG. They are drying so hoping to get them back on the bugger tomorrow! They smell cleaner...not that they smelled bad before but just cleaner this time! Fingers crossed!!
