Hi ladies,
I am planning on cloth diapering our firstborn. I've visited Cotton Babies in Vancouver and also have spoken with friends who cloth diaper and know it's the way I want to go. I've started looking into cloth diapering services and have only been able to find Tidee Didee in the Portland area. Google reviews + Yelp show some pretty bad reviews in 09/10, but they have gotten much better for this calendar year.
Do any of you have experience with a cloth diapering service in our area? I'll need them to deliver to Washington.
What do you feel about the ease of not having to clean your own diapers to the increased cost? For example, TD offers 70 diapers/week at $18.50, which comes out to about $900/year - almost the same as what you'd be paying for disposables, right? Is it worth it?
Thank you! Any thoughts are appreciated!
Re: Cloth Diapering Service - Portland/SE WA
I've only met 2 people who have used a cd service, both w/ TD and one thought it was not worth it and the other did. The first stopped using it and was happy and the other still uses it, I think (I'm not a part of that play group anymore).
I've never used one, but after CDing for nearly 3 years, I can tell you that I don't think it would be worth it. It's just hard to imagine it being worth the extra money to save such a small amount of time. I spend maybe an hour a week washing/folding/putting away diapers. It's the easiest laundry you'll ever have to deal with.
That said, maybe I'd feel differently if I tried a service. We've also never had to use shared laundry, which would make it a much bigger expense and pain. And, I'm a full time SAHM who works part time, so I do have pretty flexible laundry time, meaning I can start it in the am and just deal w/ it when I remember. I also love being able to control what detergent is used. I'm not sure what TD uses, but it does seem like different kids are sensitive to different things.
Good luck!
I?ve known four families who used Tidee Didee over the last 4 years or so. They have all be extremely happy with the service.
But cost wise, no, it?s not worth it. If you don?t have a washer, then it probably would be. It?s much, much less expensive to do cloth on your own. I did the math for the increase in our utilities when we started washing our cloth diapers, and while I can?t remember the exact number, it wasn?t even close to being high enough to make a service or disposables comparable.
Washing them yourself is not hard or gross. It?s one load of laundry every two or three days. It?s much grosser to store up a week of dirty diapers in a garbage bag (like you do for a diaper service).
Plus, you can do something other than prefolds if you do them on your own. We did prefolds for many months and liked them. They aren?t difficult to learn, and the snappi makes pins obsolete. But all-in-ones and pockets are so much nicer. They are quick and just as easy as a disposable.
We bought one-size diapers (the Bum Genius Elemental) and are extremely happy with them. It?s a large up-front cost, but you never have to buy diapers again! After two years, they are ready for LO2. We use one disposable at night.
If you want to try out cloth, then I suggest a Kissaluv fitted rental package for the newborn period. They are fabulous newborn diapers, and it?s a pretty small financial commitment. We used this rental with DD and it worked great. I plan to do it again with LO2.
I have used TD for the last 4 years and it is totally worth it! I am a homemaker, but I still wouldn't want to trade the convenience of having a service. I have a hard enough time keeping up with the regular laundry let alone making sure I get the diapers washed too.
You don't have to rinse or dump any solid matter from the diapers with the service. Not that it would be too gross for me to do that if I were laundering my own, but it is very, very simple having a service.
Once your baby gets bigger and uses fewer diapers per day you can cut down on the total qty delivered per week and the cost goes down slightly. From what I have seen with disposables, the larger size diaper your child wears, the fewer come in a package and the price doesn't seem to drop.
I have always found them to have very good customer service and would totally recommend them.
