School-Aged Children

? about 8-9 yr old and music

Would you let your 3rd grade child listen to Ke$ha?

We are in a long distance parenting situation and facing a debate about media influences. Sometimes I let my 8 yr old stepdaughter listen to Katy Perry or other popular musicians if the lyrics are clean or the song is positive/uplifting. For the most part though, we keep the music very PG in our house. I guess we are conservative parents. Her other family let's her listen to whatever they are interested in, including Eminim and Ke$ha. My stepdaughter is currently expressing wanting to be Ke$ha for Halloween.

My husband and I are upset about this. I don't think Ke$ha is at all appropriate for a kid her age. Are we just too uptight? Would you let your 8 yr old listen to that type of music?

  • My daughter has always listened to whatever I listen to whether it's Kesha (don't care for her music), Jay Z, Rolling Stones or whatever it may be.  I don't monitor what I listen to but I can understand why it would be bothersome.  There was one song awhile back that when it came on I always changed the station.  It's called "Birthday Sex" and it said just that in the lyrics over and over.

  • The kids ipods are PG but I like a variety of music so they know and like some radio versions of Eminem and similar music.  I personally can't stand Kesha or Katy Perry so we don't listen to those.

My girls listen to whatever I listen to.  We listen to the news in the car but if we're home and they want to listen to my Ipod I let them.  My 6 year old's favorite artist is Pink right now.  She can't decipher most of the lyrics so I"m not too worried about it.   My 8 year old asks to listen to artists I've never heard of.  She's obviously learning this at school.  Makes me a little afraid of what she'll learn in the coming years.

  • I think in a blended family situation, your best bet might be work directly with your step-daughter to help instill your values about the songs and musical artists she's hearing.

For instance, just let he know where you stand on Ke$ha.  You can put it in a kid-friendly way that makes a point like, "You know, I do think some of her songs are catchy, but I don't like that she seems so concerned about _____________ (whatever you disagree with in the songs.)  Your dad and I think it's more important to be a nice person.  Sometimes singers can get famous by singing about things like ___________, though.  Singers want to sing songs that are popular, but that doesn't mean we have to agree with every idea in those songs."

Ditto!  I just make sure that the choices I upload to the i-pod are censored versions.
