1st appt, didn't go as planned

I had my first appt today. DH came with because they said they were going to look for the HB on the doppler. I had this crazy fear about a missed m/c and not being able to hear the heartbeat...so I was nervous.

She pulled out the doppler and couldn't find it. There was nothing there. She tried all over the place and just wasn't picking it up. Logically, I know this can happen since we're just on the edge of when the HB can be picked up.

She said she had to go get an U/S machine to determine viability. As soon as she left the room DH looked at me and said, "uh oh."

Thankfully as soon as she got the magical "dildo-cam" in place, a baby popped up right away. I saw the little flicker of the hearbeat instantly. I pointed it out to DH and he thought it was so cool. The baby was snuggled up at first, but after a minute it started moving it's legs & arms all over the place! It was seriously crazy how much it was moving, yet I felt nothing.

Baby is measuring a little ahead, at 11w,0d--but they aren't going to change my EDD. (I am 100% certain of my dates because I was charting.) While it was scary not being able to find the HB, in a way it worked out because I wouldn't have gotten to see the baby if the doppler worked.

I can't believe they tried the doppler first being so early. It was 13 weeks with DD before they could find it on their nifty-difty medical doppler.

What a scare! But glad all turned out a-okay.

I am so glad everything was ok! When we went he didn't even try to hear the heartbeat with the doppler. He only used the "dildocam" and we saw the heart flicker which was SO COOL.

In the big packet of info they gave me, it said I would only be getting one U/S (the 20 week anatomy scan) It said they don't schedule first appts until 10 weeks so they they can find the HB on the doppler. So when they couldn't find it, it made my worry more than I should have I guess. It just seemed like "the norm" in their practice only to use the doppler. I have a feeling there are a lot more 10weekers going in and getting nervous for nothing. Tongue Tied

My office will try as early as 10 weeks. I know at 12 weeks there's a 50/50 chance you'll hear it so it's a gamble. They found DD's h/b as soon as the doppler went on my belly at 12 weeks last time, but my 1st appoint is a week earlier this time so we were told it *might* happen.

Glad everything looked okay!

It's common to not be able to hear the hb with a doppler at 10 weeks. I'm surprised they didn't tell you before they checked.

I'm glad everything worked out. FWIW, there are different types of dopplers that will pick up a h/b at 10 weeks. With DS, we had our second appt at 10 weeks and he didn't have the proper doppler but we went back in the next day and there was the heartbeat. I also have plenty of extra flub so it is possible. I know they will try tomorrow but honestly I'm not expecting to hear anything, hopefully they'll give me another peek at the babe though.
