Intro - PCOS

My husband and I have been TTC for a little over a year, and I was just recently diagnosed with PCOS.  Still trying to absorb what that means for me and our ttc journey.  I've been lurking for a bit, but am hoping to become a more active poster.

What books, if any, do you recommend to help me better understand PCOS and how I can work to manage it.

  • I'm diagnosed with PCOS and books for me have been tricky...Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a pretty good one and contains lots of info for learning to understand your body.  I would love to hear any suggestions anyone else has. I have done lots of looking around on the internet but honestly hearing the stories and suggestions of others on this board have given me tons of information!

  • Thanks ladies!  I had suspected PCOS for a while, but never was tested for it.  At least I know what the problem is now and can move forward.  DH and I are on cycle 13, and will be starting clomid with our RE as soon as AF arrives.

    I read TCOYF in November of 2009 in preparation for TTC and have been charting my temps for about a year.  I have done a bunch of googling about PCOS, but other than an overview of symptoms/treatments, it wasn't very helpful.  I'm going to give the PCOS handbook a try for now to see if that gives me some guidance on how to change my diet habits for the better.

  • I also have PCOS and I was diagnosed at the end of June 2011. I had been off BCP since October of 2010, had my first period in April 2011 and then nothing. I scheduled an appointment with my doctor in June 2011 (after I failed to have yet another period) and she did a bunch of testing and determined that i had PCOS. she put me on progesterone to force a period. I was getting married at the end of July so she didn't do anything else, this was preemptive so that i wouldn't have one during my wedding/honeymoon. Anyways, I went back in August and she put me on a second round of progestrone and i start clomid tomorrow (9/9/11). Anyways, to get to the point, is what she told me was this: your body produces several eggs each month that develop in a sac in your ovaries. Then hormones are released that tell your body to mature an egg and release it. When this doesn't happen the eggs will remain in their sac and form what they call the cysts. It has been discovered that insulin plays a major role with your hormones. If your insulin is continually storing everything, including your hormones, then there won't be enough hormones left to signal the release of an egg. Which of course means no ovulation and usually no cycle. This is why they recommend getting control of your diet because it helps to control your insulin. You can try what they call the "diabetic" diet, which I have heard helps alot. Basically no more than 4-5g of sugar per "meal." I know it's not a book to look through, but it's all I've got.
