I wasn't going to get in to a p*ssing match. Especially during nap time when I have bonbons to eat- and corporate tax returns that need to be filed ON TIME by 9/15.
I told her that it costs $0.44 to file a tax return on paper via the mail. Forms are available free from the IRS and many public libraries, or downloadable from www.irs.gov. I'm so mean.
(I have no idea if she even read my post before she deleted it.)
That whole thing just made my eyes bleed. I can't believe that there are people that dumb/naive in the world. And to think, she has 2 children, and doesn't work, so she's probably one of those people that would get a ton of money back every year.
I actually have some of the post left in my browser cache - here is the relevant craziness for those who missed it:
OP:
My partner and I are have always struggled financially. We worked for the same company at one time but in separate states. We are not legally married because finances keep getting in the way. I am, for now, a SAHM. I say for now because I work when I can find work but in Southern MS it's really hard to find work in this economy.
So, my question is this: For the past tree years I haven't filed my taxes because I didn't want him to pay for it. (He's taken care of me and our children financially and I don't think it's right to have him help me.) Now, I'm able to file my taxes w/ my own money. Should I pay someone like H&R Block to do it and have in guarenteed or is Turbo Tax a good way to save money? Again, we are struggling financially. And I've been paying the bills while he gets cleared to return to work. We are running low on money but I have to file my taxes no later than Oct. 15 of this year. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated. TID

Sorry, I'm a bit tired let me explain a little bit more. No we are not married. I haven't filed because the recession hit us hard. When he offered I thought I could do it on my own w/o his help, but that was not the case. We've had to use what little money we had to surrvive for the past three years and so I was unable to file. I know there will be ramifications, but I've always had the most taken out as a safety net. I shouldn't have to pay, therefore I shouldn't have to pay an interest to Uncle Sam. I just don't want Uncle Sam knocking on my door, so to speak, saying time to file.
It seems as though we are the only people who have been devastated in the crash of the economy.

If you people don't know anything about the tax regulations and codes, please don't post, I did not come here for belittlement, if you have never been in a situation where you have had to put something on the back burner to be able to provide for somewhere else, I'm happy for you, and if your afraid or you think that not doing your taxes every year right on time is BAD, well it's not. You have up to 3 years from that tax year owed, to file, now as The so called tax attorney says, she would have known this, and offered advice instead of SHAKING HER HEAD. Fraud.
I have seen alot of good advice and help fom this site, but some of you people are just mean, this site isn't for you to start attacking people when YOU THINK something isn't right. Do some research before you open your mouth.
Well, for her children's sake I'm going to hope she was joking. But chances are...she actually is as ignorant as her posts make her sound. Good luck to her children. I hope she spends more time looking for a job and paying her bills and less time on thebump.
1. she really TRULY thought it was ok to file every 3 years. And that the recession was an excuse to not file taxes
2. she thought going to H&R block was a good idea.
3. She said she had her 'own money' to file her taxes-- but before she said she withheld the most and didn't think she owed. Soooo. umm. ok. then why didn't you file each year if that was the case. -- Come on.
So now- she is going to owe a boat load of penalties and compounded interest. much more than just filing on time- and dealing with the IRS to make arrangements.

To recap:
OP: Should I use Turbo Tax or H&R Block to file the last 3 years of back taxes?
Replies: You haven't paid taxes in the last 3 years???
OP: My SO pays for everything else, but I'm too proud to ask him to pay my taxes, and I work sporadically, so I just didn't pay for 3 years
Replies: I'm a tax pro and you've got to be kidding me
Other replies: Quit being so mean, you have 3 years to file returns. No you don't. Yes you do. You're all mean.

There were many sad things going on in that post.
1. she really TRULY thought it was ok to file every 3 years.
Ignoring Uncle Sam is playing with fire.
Wait, she works sporadically and has her withholdings set so that she over pays.....so theoretically she would be getting a refund.
So what couldn't she afford? You don't have to pay to file unless you're using Turbo Tax or a professional tax preparer.
