I have not experienced a blighted ovum. My understanding is that it occurs when a fertilized egg implants in the uterus, but no embryo develops. My friend who had a blighted ovum said that her doctor told her that she had a gestational sac, but it was empty. :-(
Married 4/12/08
DS born 11/17/2009 via c-section at 39 weeks.
11/12/2011 BFP #2!! m/c 7w5d.
2/28/2012 BFP #3 Beta #1-12dpo = 18; Beta #2-16dpo = 185; Beta #3-18dpo = 505. EDD 11/10/2012. Ectopic discovered at 5w4d. D&C followed by methotrexate.
From what I have heard, blighted ovum is a vastly over-used term that is supposed to refer to a non-successful pregnancy that terminates in the first early weeks of pregnancy (like week 5), but is applied to far broader range of miscarriages. I had a m/c after I developed a gestational sac (it developed up through week 7) with no actual fetus. My body kept acting like I was pregnant through week 11. The doctor diagnosed it as Blighted Ovum, but after I researched it later, it didn't technically meet the criteria. And yep, it is just a "normal" chromosomal miscombination, it doesn't necessarily indicate there is anything wrong with either partner.
Re: Question
I am very sorry for your loss.
