So many onesies... but no pants?

Let me start by saying that I appreciate any baby gift we receive. Really, I do. But my brother and his fiance came to visit today and brought over 10 onesies for each of the twins. That's right, 20 total. They are 0-3 and 3-6 month size. They're the ones that come with 5 on each hanger, different colors/design on each. But not a single pair if pants. Oh, and they got the girls both the same ones so we have two of each. No offense to anyone who dresses they're twins the same but I don't plan on doing this. My brother's fiance has always picked great outfits for DD1. I was surprised really by this gift. No pants??

  • haha it's too funny-I was thinking that today as I was folding and putting clothes away.  We have 1 pair of pants for DD and 3 pairs for DS.  I was wondering if I was missing something with the lack of pants!

  • Do they have kids?  I've noticed that people have kids give gifts of clothing a bit differently than those without.  Those with kids, make sure to give season appropriate clothing as gifts (and a few months out.  Those without, give the cute clothes that are currently on the front racks, without thinking about the age and correlation to season.  I used to be one of those...now, I know better.  :-)  I had lots of adorable summer onesies and outfits for my boys who were born at the end of September, and were never able to wear many of the lovely gifts.

  • How funny!  Just today I realized that we have about 200 onesies and 4 pair of pants...  I had to make a trip out to the carters outlet to pick some up =)

  • I had this same experience with baby gifts.  I got tons of onesies and cute shirts (all of which were very much appreciated of course) but barely any pants.  I didn't realize it until my boys were here and I actually had to dress them but we had barely any.  I think it's just that onesies and shirts usually have cutesy sayings on them and pants are usually pretty boring so no one wants to buy them.  I always tell my friends now when they are pregnant to buy some pairs of pants ahead of time because chances are they will need them.

  • Onesies are wonderful for layering, so you don't need pants for each onesie, buy one or 2 neutral pair per kid that will match if you decide to use the onesie as part of an outfit.
  • Unless we are using Baby Legs, I use a pair of pants for every onesie. After all, the poop blow-outs go through both layers generally. I'd return half of them and buy pants!

This!! We went through a TON of 0-3 onesies. I also don't dress my girls in the same outfits, but just because you have matching ones doesn't mean they need to wear them at the same time. Or you can exchange a few, but you will definately need them!

Also, none of mine had pants which was perfect. I evened returned several pants that we had. Right now summer in the west is HOT. I have kept the girls in onesies almost every day for the past 2 months, and onesies only, no pants. Not sure when it starts getting cooler in your area though :)

  • I've never used onesies with pants.  I guess I'm the odd one here, but DS only wore onesies to sleep in.  He's never been out of the house in a onesie.  I plan to do the same with these babies.  It's kind of a pain to take pants off, then unsnap, then change a diaper.  We just use tshirts and pants during the day and onesies at night.  If you want them to wear the onesies out, then I'd just buy one or two pair of pants that match all of the onesies.

  • When I was washing all the clothes we got for the babies I noticed that we got very few pairs of pants. I didn't really think it was THAT weird (because I've never had children before and don't know the first thing about dressing babies IN NOVEMBER) and then I went out shopping to fill in the gaps and really did think "get a couple more pairs of pants at least) and ended up with about 20 more onesies. So I have no one but myself to blame...My guess is that people without babies really DON'T know - even when I'm thinking about how few pairs of pants I have for them, I still end up buying just onesies.

  • I dressed my babies in sleep gowns for the first 2 weeks, then they were in onesies with long-sleeved feetie pj's over them for the next 2-3 months (as it got warmer we cut out the onesies underneath.  This summer they wore exclusively onesies - honestly it was too hot for shorts.  I had lots of pants, but they wore them so rarely, we rotated about 5 pairs of pants.  For some reason, I never really dress them in the "real people clothes" that we have...

  • At home my babies lived in onesies.  It wasn't until they started daycare and the air conditioning was super chilly that I noticed there was a problem with the lack of pants in their wardrobe.  I still end up buying more onesies eventhough I go to the store with the intention of buying more pants.

I'm odd then, too. DD wears dresses and I keep DS in one piece outfits like overalls or jon jons that have snaps on the legs. I'll use a white onesie as an undershirt but that's about it.

I have a theory that onesies, and the upward pressure from the snap crotch cause more poo blowouts than would happen without them. I can count on one hand the number of blowouts we've had and they've almost all involved a onesie.
