Food Allergy

Had our first scary weekend. (sorry...LONG)

Ugh.  We've been really lucky with DS' allergies thus far (egg, peanut, turkey and dairy).  We went to a BBQ on Saturday where everything seemed to be "tainted."  I didn't trust that the homemade stuff didn't contain one of his no-no foods.  Poor DS could only eat chips so we left when he got really hungry.  We stopped at a local bbq place to grab some takeout and while waiting I gave DS a bite of my salt water taffy (they had it at the front counter).  He loved it but started breaking out on the drive home.

The ride home was miserable. He was straining in his carseat and breaking out on his face.  I gave him Benadryl when we got home and it didn't seem to do much.  He refused to eat and just cried. I felt awful. I picked him up to give him a hug and he puked all over. After cleaning up and getting him calmed down I texted my BFF who is up on all things food related and asked her what the hell is in taffy that he would react to.  She texted back and said some have EGG or MAYO in it.  WTF?  I felt awful.  Poor DS was so scared after throwing up but he did feel better afterwards.  Ugh.

THEN Saturday we were out and about so we decided to grab lunch (holy bad eating weekend!).  We went to a place we've been a dozen times and I got the same meal for DS and I to share that I always do.  Again, he broke out almost immediately.  TUrns out they fry their chips in peanut oil!  The chick didn't know if it was a recent change and the manager was busy.  Whatever.  So, now I don't know if they've always fried in peanut oil and his allergy is getting worse or if it was a recent change.  Either way, we won't be going back but I will be caling today to find out.

I just feel so awful for not asking these questions up front but we've never had situations like this.  Like I said, we've been lucky.  Everytime DS has gotten sick it was from a known exposure or a test.  I told DH that it makes me really nervous to give him anything without double and triple checking ingredients.

  • sorry to hear that. poor little guy.

I am known to bring a huge bag of foods (that would probably feed a village) to every event.  It sucks but it's just not worth it.  Restaurants change their ingredients all the time and who knows what's at your friends bbq.

thankfully he didn't need to go to the ER and benadryl/time took care of it.

  • Exactly....we've been so lucky that aside from his first anaphylactic reaction to dairy at 8 months old, we've never had to take him to the ER.  He's never had another ana reaction.

I will now and forever be that mom who carries a load of food with us everywhere.  It was easier when he was little and didn't have an opinion on what he ate!

  • we even go one step beyond bringing food now- I keep a few favorite snacks at the places we visit frequently (my mom's, my g'mas, my MIL and my best friend). Thankfully those relatives/friends are totally on board with it.  It makes it just a tiny bit easier to go somewhere.  Bringing your own food is a pain- but it's completely worth it so you don't have to guess what's in the ingredients.  We have one safe restaurant that we'll visit with J- and even then I check on-line/call ahead just to make sure it's still safe.
