My max is probably around $50. I think that's what I spent last year on a discontinued Lightning McQueen costume on ebay that my son LOVED. That's probably my max.
All depends on the costume I am usually the thrifty type...but 2yrs ago when DD wanted to be elmo I wasnt going to get her that full body suit thing. So I went on ebay and found a tutu version was way to cute to pass and spent $50. If I find the good shots I will post it...right now I can only find the trick or treat ones and due to it being cold here shes in a coat with sweats underneath.
I'm with you - no more than $15-20. Last year I found a complete Carter's lady bug outfit at the Goodwill w/ the tags still on and it was $6. This year I am using a dress that we already have and adding to it, so I don't plan on spending more than $10 on accessories.
As kids, we never went to the store and picked a complete costume in a bag or on a hanger. We always made unique costumes from pieces we'd find second hand or in our own closets. That's what I intend to do, too. My mom also would pick things up on clearance after Halloween to add to our costume box.
Im probably not one to ask this question to b/c I have a new found love of Halloween when it comes to finding coordinating costumes for the kids, lol! I think I spent close to $75 for both costumes + shipping last year and will spend about the same this year. If DH would have agreed, I would have spent $100 on sushi and soy sauce costumes this year but he wasnt having it.
Last year I spent 60 on the authentic Disney store buzz light year costume. It was worth EVERY penny. I got awesome photos! He still plays dress up in it. He is currently a completely spoiled only child and as a photographer I can't pass up the perfect outfit for a great photo op. This summer at Disney World he fell in love with pirates of the caribbean so we'll see where that leads us. It doesn't help that he gets so into the costumes and really 'plays' the part when he's wearing it. I should have 'sucker' printed on my forehead when it comes to Halloween costumes.
We don't really have a price limit. I'm not saying we spend $100 per costume. If it's a $50 costume and then accessories are another $20, we'll get it. It's one of our favorite holidays and we let the kids get whatever. My parents were the same way. : )
I do go on eBay if I can't find a certain costume or a special one that the boys want.
I bought an adorable strawberry costume at Old Navy for DD1 and spent just under $20 (with a coupon), and spent about $20 on a cute piggy costume for DD2. I was hoping to spend $30 or less per child.
On our way to 3 under 4!

Baby Boy Due This Summer!
My sister will probably make DD's and we will end up spending more than is reasonable - but it is just because she is crafty and we think it is fun and we get carried away.
Her first Halloween, DD wore a little ballerina tutu with a pumkin on it. Last year we didn't dress her as anything. This year I'm not going to buy a costume, but only because she already has 2 really cute dresses that I'm trying to decide between. A Flamenco dress that my Mom sent her from Spain, and a Belle princess dress from Disney.
I'd say I'd spend up to $80 or so, if it was a costume that she really wanted. Every year I go all out for a Christmas dress for her, last year we spent around $100 between a dress, jacket, tights, shoes, etc.
I'll do more for Halloween when she can actually have input on it. Right now I just see it as a waste of money (for me).
I try to keep it to around $30 per kid, but one year I spent over $60 on our middle child since we were going for an all-around Star Wars theme and that was the only character he wanted to be.
Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.
It depends on the costume and it's availability. DS has reused his former Halloween costumes repeatedly. It's just a regular day around here when Superman or Optimus Prime make an appearance:)
Therefore, if I know it's something they will love and it will turn into a play clothes item I'll spend a little more for quality. If it's something harder to find and I have to go to costume store because they are absolutely head-over-heals in love with the idea, I'll go maybe $10 over (but again, as long as it's going to be used again).
I understand. It's something they'll wear once, maybe twice at the most. Last year I spent $30, but this year I'm realizing there are cheaper options. One costume will be $10 for DS#2, and I think when I'm done, DS#1's costume will be around $18.

I try to keep it under $20. And I hope that DD2 can fit into DD1's previous costume(s). I just don't want to spend more on something they only wear a couple times.
Though now I am putting the costumes in the dress-up bin... so they actually get used a LOT, but I still can't bring myself to pay more for something as silly as a costume I guess I'm frugal LOL

If you wait until 2 weeks or so before Halloween, Old Navy has most of their costumes on sale for about $15. We have gotten our older daughters last 2 costumes there for cheap.
I just bought DD2 a costume at Childrens Place for $16. They are on sale this weekend, 25% off and I had a %15 off email.
I bought DD one at the Children's Place last week too. It was on sale and I had a 25% off coupon. So I got the strawberry and tights for $18.
ETA: My mom always made our costumes growing up and I would really like to do that too. How ever making them usually is pretty expensive for all the material, supplies and accessories. There is no way I could make the same costume for less than what I paid. I think next year I might start making them though.
I've lucked out so far and haven't spent more than $8 each on a costume. Last year DS1 and DS2 were both skeletons using the Carter's jammies. DS1 says he wants wear this again this year, but I'd kind of like to buy him something new. DS2 is going to be a monkey from a costume that was one of my little cousins. At this point I would be more willing to spend more on a costume for DS1 that DS2 might wear in another year or two. My mom still kept the costumes she made for my brother and I when we were kids, so hopefully they'll be interested in wearing them sometime. There's an amazing dinasaur one.
No more than $30 per child this year. DS1 wants to be green lantern and DH wants DS2 to be wolverine so I'll spend more to get those costumes. I can make them if I have to. In the past when the kids haven't cared about what they are I've spent around $10- $15.

around fifteen to twenty for DD and DS when he was younger
Now this year, he has his own opinions and keeps asking me for a Super Why costume, and I ended up spending more for him this year.
