We have to go car shopping in the next couple weeks and I am DREADING it!! We too are on a budget, and I don't want to deal with the salesmen (or women).
Ick - when I bought my current car we actually had a salesmen tell me I didn't want a feature I had asked for - umm yes I do thank you very much!! He called later with a car I might have actually wanted but since he was so rude we just ignored him :P
If you are looking for a new car, some banks or credit unions allow you to "build your car" through their web site. The bank then sends the request for your built car to dealers in your area and you can get a quote. There is no negotiation. And then if you want, can say to one dealer that another dealer will give this price, can you do any better? And do all of this online, not in person. I hate dealing with the salesperson in person. I know they are making a living but you can't help feel like desperate fresh meat. So you just go to the dealer, testdrive, and confirm you want it. They have to give you the quote that you got from the bank. Some banks do this for used cars too. I just did this and it was relatively painless (except for my wallet).
I decided exactly what I wanted, DH went online for pricing and then we just went to 1 dealership and leased it. It was so much easier doing everything online beforehand.
Depending on how soon you need it you might be able to get a dealer to FIND what you're looking for. We've done this with our last three we went to a dealer and said
our budget is XXXXX-XXXXX we want either This Model or This Model Year XX or newer with less than XXXX miles and it MUST have these features and be one of these colors.
It took 3 days for the quickest car and 4 weeks for the longest car but we always got exactly what they wanted they would just look at sales/auctions for what we were looking for and call us before they bought it to make sure it fit what we were looking for. I know its gotta be a smaller dealer to be willing to do it, but outs in town has been great!
I hate all the negotiating bs. I also hate feeling like a crumb of food on the beach with all the seagulls fighting to snatch you up.
Granted I'm 30 and only on my 2nd car, when I bought my 2nd car I ended up with a good strategy that I'll use again. I had 2 different Ford dealerships fighting for the sale, so they kept dropping the price to get my business. We did this over the phone, so I wasn't stuck in an office with a salesman. I got a brand new Explorer for $19,000 instead of the $27,000 sticker price- and it was actually painless.

We just bought a new car last week. We researched online first. Our bank told us to use nadaguides.com instead of kbb.com b/c they use nadaguides.
Our shopping experience was pretty painless but we actually found a salesman that we liked. We went through some bad ones first.
I love my new car!!!!
