Baby Size Q

So I'm 40 w 6 days and I'm scheduled to be induced on Wednesday evening. At my last appointment my dr said she estimates the baby to be about 8lb 10oz...this scares me a bit since I'm only 5ft, and kinda petite. My husband isn't a big person either, he's about 5 ft 6. I know the dr's estimate can be off, but what has anyone else experienced? Was your dr's estimate pretty close, or how much off were they?

I was honestly expecting our baby to be around 6.5 - 7.5 lbs, given that I'm not huge and DH and I were both around that size.

Re: Baby Size Q

  • When I was in labor they did an U/S and predicted that the baby was just under 7 pounds (similar to what they had predicted all along).. well she came out 5 hours later and was only 5 pounds 8 ounces... soooo I would take their estimate with a grain of salt.

  • They were pretty close with mine. They estimated 5lb.2oz and he was 4lb13oz. I'd say it depends on the doc. Don't worry though. Your body will do what it needs to do.

  • my daughter was predicted to be about 9 lbs and she was 6.15 and my son was predicted to be 10 lbs and he was only 7.15. They usually say the ultrasound could be off by a lb either way.

  • My doc didn't tell me a weight she thought lo was.. but she kept saying that I was going to have a big baby (I don't understand why she thought that.  At 40weeks I looked smaller than most women at 30 weeks)  Anyway, lo came out weighing 6lbs 12oz.  GL

  • My DD was 6lbs 13oz. I was expecting DS to be slightly bigger, but everyone was surprised when he came out as a whopping 8lbs 15oz. Honestly, it didn't hurt any more than my daughter and I tore less this time.

  • Mine was WAY off.. From Maternal-Fetal medicine @37 weeks we heard 8lbs already.. from OB at 38w 6d (last appt before delivery) we heard 9lbs 10 oz..

    Stella weighed 7lb 11oz.

  • Mine was pretty accurate, my baby was 9 lb, 5 oz. I am 5'3, average build and my husband is 5'10 and very skinny. Everyone was surprised that our baby was so big! A word of encouragement though, I was nervous about having a large baby but I read in several places that in most normal cases your body won't make a baby that is too big for you to deliver. I did have to push for a long time (about 4 hours) but I was able to do it. Good luck for a healthy delivery!

  • My doctor was WAY off. Through the end of my pregnancy, they kept estimating my baby was on track to be around 8.5 pounds. I had a growth ultrasound that said the same thing...on track to be a bigger baby.

    She came out 6lbs8oz.

    Those estimates can be off...

  • With both kids, my doctor was spot on.

    Son- Guess was 8lbs 4oz, he was 8lbs 6oz.

Daughter- Guess was 7lb 15oz (at the 40 week mark), she was 7lb 8oz (at the 39 week mark). Since they gain a 1/2 lb a week, this was accurate.

  • My doctor was almost right on for mine.  At 38w he guessed DD would weight about 8 pounds 2 oz if I delivered that week.  I delivered at 38w6d and she was 7 pounds 14 oz.

  • Our doc was off too. I had 3 growth u/s. The first one estimated 7 lbs 6 oz but doc said the tech didn't get a good measurement for the head and that baby was really 8+. Next two estimates were 7 lbs 14 oz and 8 lbs 2 oz. I was expecting at least an 8 pounder and she came out 7 lbs 7 oz (almost exactly the estimate that the doc said was off).

  • I had a growth scan about a month before delivery and the tech said she would be around 7+ lbs when she was born. She was 7lbs and 3oz. The tech was pretty close with her estimate.

Voice any concerns with your doctor now.

  • My ultrasounds were saying LO was almost 7lbs at 34 wks and when LO came out he was only 6lbs 10oz. My docs guesstimate by feeling was much more accurate, he guessed 6lbs 8 oz at our doc appt 3 days before he was born. I definitely think it depends and to take the guesstimates with a grain of salt.

  • Both docs in the practice thought he was going to be over 9 lbs.  As it turned out, he was 7 lbs 9 oz.

  • The docs in my practice said "high 7's" and he was 9lbs 3oz o_O needless to say, we were ALL surprised! I'm tall, so apparently I hid a big baby pretty well.
