Anyone deliver at Madigan Hosp in WA?

Just curious of your experiences.  We just moved from Fort Campbell where I was sent to BACH and I was not impressed at all with their L&D ward.

TIA!!

Re: Anyone deliver at Madigan Hosp in WA?

  • There are two females in my unit who recently delivered there.  I am scheduled for Oct.  I came from Germany and had previously delivered at WACH, Ft Stewart, GA.  Talk about a horrible place and experience.  Madigan is the Ritz compared to Stewart.

I have been on L&D a few times regarding complications and so far it has been a pleasurable experience.

  • yes I did. It wasnt bad, the worst thing was that during all of my appointments, I rarely had the same doctor...even though the woman who delivered my daughter I had her for a doctor a few times before.

I went into preterm labor at 25 weeks, I was really REALLY scared and they were very sweet and nice to me, they are nice in that sense. And when I finally went into labor. My nurse was amazing. she was fun. I will never forget her.

but every experience is what you make it. and i wish you the best.

If you knew better, you'd do better.
  • My friend recently delivered there. She said the nurses were very nice, but she did end up sharing a room and her husband did have to leave after visiting hours, which was 10 p.m...which left her a few hours post-labor...alone. I'd recommend St. Josephs or Fransican Women's Center (which is where I'm going) if you have considered having nurse-midwives. Both awesome places :)

  • I haven't delivered @ Madigan yet... but due in December and am currrently being seen there. I'm in the process of switching to a civilian OB though. I personally have not had a good experience with their OB office (also haven't heard many good things from other pregnant women) and after touring their L&D and talking to the nursing manager, my husband & I decided it was worth switching to standard.

Plus, we live in Puyallup and with traffic it can take up to an hour or longer (if there is an accident, excessive traffice, etc) to get to post and I don't want to be in labor & risk getting stuck in traffic that long trying to get to the hospital... so we are going to transfer to Good Sams in Puyallup.

I will say however, there are some great doctors there. The first doctor I saw was amazing! He is the head of Triage @ Madigan and to be honest, if I could request only him for the reminder of my pregnancy I would not be changing insurance coverage. My experience with the midwives has been much better than with the OB's.. and since you are seen by a team of like 30 people, you do have a chance to get these great people but not every time. Which is what frustrates me... every time I've gone in they don't read my chart, know nothing about my pregnancy, didn't enter the data from my last appointment so don't have any clue what I weighed/what was done, discussed, etc and since you don't see the same person each time and they don't bother to read your chart at all they never know what tests you need to have done yet, etc..

I can only speak about my experience though. If you end up there you'll have to let us know what you think!

  • I delivered DD there 19 months ago and had no problems.  I stayed with family medicine for my OB care and they were great, I saw the same Dr for most of my appointments (he had a few TDYs) and he delivered DD.

The nurses were great but I did have to share a room one night I was there.  It wasn't the end of the world because I sent DH home that night anyway.

Honestly, I wish we hadn't PCSed because I would love to have this DD there too, I really liked my Dr.

  • Haha, oh yes. I delivered there. I was seen by OB for my prenatal care - you can request to see the same doc at appointments. I then had preyerm labor at 29 weeks and stayed inpatient until 33 weeks. 4 weeks hospital bedrest. I have to say, I was very impressed. The L&D nurses knew what they were doing, and the Mother and baby nurses (for the bedrest and then for postpartum) were wonderful. The NICU, though I hope you don't need it, is one of the best in the state of WA. I had to share a room for part of the bedrest, but postpartum they try to have you in a private room if possible. If you deliver after 8pm your spouse can stay for a while, and if you have a csection they can stay overnight to help you. I have nothing bad to say about it, just as in civilian care make sure you are proactive and speak up if you don't feel you're getting the treatment you need and you should be pleased with the results!

  • I have not, but I am terrified to deliever there! I know that every hospital has their horror stories, but I've heard way too many bad ones. I've been there a couple times and I am not impressed either. I spent 9 hours waiting in the ER on a Saturday, then went to the doctor to get checked up because I was feeling worse. The PA did an ultrasound, told me i was good to do. I told her she wasn't listening to me and that I was feeling worse (kidney issues) and she said, "Well then just go to the ER." I was NOT a happy camper because I drove from GH to get more help. I had to sit another 8 hours in the ER and the ER doctor told me that my OB had been putting me on the wrong meds. I want to deliever at Tacoma General, but I haven't talked to Tricare about the cost that would be. Do anyone know if you have to share a room after delievery at Madigan?
