Baby Names

First and last names that start with the same letter - thoughts?

What do you think of naming our son/daughter a name that begins with the same letter as our last name? Is it all dependent on what the names are? Or is this just a faux pas regardless?

Re: First and last names that start with the same letter - thoughts?

  • depends on the names. Both of my parent's given names were alliterative and I think they sound fine. Some names don't work though.

I think non-aliterative are totally fine (Tristan Taylor, Penelope Philips)

  • It doesn't bother me. I know plenty of people with the same letter first-last names...Arthur Adams...Liliana Lane...etc. It's really not something that should make or break a name, IMO.

    This.

  • I think it totally depends on the name.  My last name starts with L, Lucas sounds good with it but Liam does not.

  • It might depend on the actual names, # of syllables, general flow etc.

Since I got married my first and last name start with the same letter and I think sounds great :)

  • My first and last names start with a K. Everyone has always loved my name and how it flows. The only thing about it that I dont like is when people ask if my middle name starts with a K too......
  • DH name is Luke, last name Long_ _ _ _, and if we have a son, he will probably be Lincoln.  I think its totally fine UNLESS it sounds obviously awkward.

  • Agreed- it depends on the name.  Also, you might "lose" some control over how a name sounds anyhow!  My first and last names were different letters.  Then I got married, took my DH's name, and now my first and last names start w/ the same letter.

  • It does depend on the name but my DH and I actually both like alliterations.  Our son has a B name and our last name begins with a B.  I think they flow nicely.

  • If they are matchy sounding or rhyme in any way then no.  I knew a Mason Mixon.  Ugh!  But the males in my family are all named Matthew and last name started with M and they sound nothing alike so I never thought anything of it.

  • Depends on the name. There are some "B" names I like for a first name, and our last name starts with B.

  • Depends.  My given name was alliterative (Jill J....) and I got lots of compliments on the way it sounded.  It never bothered me at all.  My sister is also a J name and I think it sounds fine.  (both of our names are family names - my parent's weren't like the Duggars Stick out tongue)

On the other hand, my married last name starts with a Q.  We joke in the family (my BILs and their spouses) that we all want to "steal" the best name ever - "Quinn Q....".  In reality it sounds RIDICULOUS and none of us would ever do it.  But it is just a joke that we toss around... all unborn babies are Quinn.  Big Smile

  • Depend on the name.  If we have a girl then her first and last name will start with the same letter.

Ditto.  We're probably using Bridget B_____ for a girl, but even though I love the name Benjamin, Ben B_____ just doesn't sound good with our last name and will probably get nixed by DH.

  • Depends on the names.  If the first syllables are the same, it'd probably be a deal-killer.  If not, likely not.

I think it often flows nicely.  My pet peeve is first names that end with the same sound as the first letter of the last name - ie Thomas Smith, Juliette Thomas, Mick Carlton

This is a huge pet peeve of mine. But I don't mind alliterative names as long as they're not matchy.

  • I actually think that it can sound really good.  It does depend on the name. If the ending is also similar, it starts sounding cartoonish....a la Peter Parker.
  • It depends on the names.  Both my first and maiden names start with K.  It never bothered me but my names flowed well together.  That being said, we've stayed away from S names for our kids just b/c nothing flowed well with our S last name.
