TTC after 35

Over 40-ers...menopause?

This is sort of a TTC over 35/ TTC after loss crossover question.  We are TTC after I had a miscarriage about 4 months ago.  I'm 42, and lately have been having crazy hormonal swings and even heart palpitations.  I have no information on when older women in my family go into menopause (my mom had a hysterectomy).  But I'm paranoid that my hormonal craziness is menopausal...although my periods are still very regular.  At first I thought maybe it's my hormones regulating after the miscarriage, but then I got the horrible thought that maybe it's early menopause?  Anyone else in there 40s ever deal with this horrible thought?

Re: Over 40-ers...menopause?

  • I am 39 but yes.  About two years ago I started having night sweats and wondered the same thing.  An easy way to get some information is to have your FSH tested.  Mine is extremely high and I was dx with DOR.  My doctor has even thrown around the term POF (premature Ovarian Failure).  I take this to mean that I am in some pre menopausal state.  Best of luck to you.

  • I am also 42.  I have recently noticed that I'm sweaty at night sometimes.  Was contributing this to the Crinone suppositories that I was taking for my IVF cycle.  AF remains very regular for me too-but my AMH is low and FSH was 13.  It's hard for me to know, but I know that it's not over til it's over.  My mother reached menopause around 50, and she stated that she had changes in her cycle over the two years prior.  I also feel that it's hard to know because the temperature has been fluctuating alot-and it is summertime.

  • I think it sounds more like stress/anxiety...
  • I'm 44.  I don't have any more answers than you do but you are not alone in your experience or fears.
  • I'm 41 - will be 42 in January - and I was just googling the signs of early menopause this morning.  My mother says she didn't go through it until her early 50's, but I've been convinced for a few years that I might start early.  I pray none of us who are still TTC do, but you're definitely not alone in your concerns.

  • 43...  I envy your regular periods.

Having night sweats and mood swings for the past 3 yrs.  But don't go 12 months without AF so RE says Intermittant Ovarian Failure.

    Good Luck!

  • I just turned 44 end of July and I am really afraid of this.  I have very regular periods and haven't had any "signs" but I had an appointment with the RE who made it sound like I don't have many folies to deal with and my ovaries are "small" so I tend to believe this is the case and I have missed my window of opportunity to have a much wanted baby.  Good luck to you :)

  • I'm waaaaay late in responding to this.

I'm 41 and worry about this all the time, but I wanted to offer an alternate dx possibility ( assuming there is any problem to dx)

When I was around 37 I started having similar symptoms -- palpitations, being hot etc. Even though I was only 37 I thought about perimenopause then It turns out my thyroid was becoming overactive from Grave's Disease.

The bottom line you won't know anything unless you get bloodwork done. Good luck!
