Diaper Champ vs Diaper Genie vs regular trashcan

2nd time moms, did you use the Diaper Genie/Diaper Champ or did you go with a regular closed lid trashcan for dirty diapers in the nursery? A friend recommended the Diaper Genie, but I don't think I like the fact you have to buy refills. Wanted some input on what you guys suggest.

Re: Diaper Champ vs Diaper Genie vs regular trashcan

  • I had a diaper genie that we never used. We just used a regular trashcan and emptied it often.

  • I have a diaper genie and I really like it.  I have two beagles that get into EVERYTHING, including the trash, so I needed something that would seal shut.  There really is no odor with the diaper genie.  I don't like that I have to buy refills though.  My sister has a knock off brand that works just as well as the diaper genie and it uses regular trash bags.

  • Great post! I would love to see what everyone says. My friends gave me a diaper genie, but they said they never used it and just had a normal garbage can.

  • We have a diaper genie and we love it! I know people say they never used theirs but DS is almost always changed in his room on the changing table so ours gets used a lot. It never ever smells in there and while buying the refills kinda sucks, it's so worth it for us. Everybody is completely different so it's kinda what works best for you!

  • Great post.  I'm using CD and many people told me they used a trash can with a pillow case instead of a trash bag.  Friends who used throw away diapers said they used a trashcan and changed it often.  I don't know anyone who used a diaper genie.

  • We just used a regular trashcan with a lid that you can open with your foot.

     Something like this:

  • Neither, waste of money to me.

Wet - regular trash, change often

Poop - right in the outside garbage - I don't see the need to store it.

  • Before we started using cd's we used a diaper champ. Worked great and it only needed regular garbage bags.

  • I am a FTM, but I decided not to go with a Diaper Genie.  We bought a trach can that has a lock on the top and a foot pedal (https://www.lowes.com/pd_292720-29177-CW1320INT_0__?productId=3078317&Ntt=trash+can&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dtrash%2Bcan&facetInfo=) and I registered for these diaper sacks to keep the smell down (https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3506026&fromRegistryNumber=46530166&product_skn=668821) When the diaper sacks run out, I will just tie up the dirty diapers with a plastic bag and throw away.  I'll just use plastic bags leftover from the grocery store.  I can also keep some in my diaper bag, so if I need to change baby at a friend's house or in a resturant, it will keep the smell down. I hope this helps!
  • We started with the diaper genie. It worked great for us! I loved it! I got tired of paying for the refills and bought the diaper champ when DS was 18 months. I love not having to buy refills but OMG it stinks! I tried buying those baking soda disks in the baby dept but they don't work. His whole room is stinky. Yuck. We might switch back to the diaper genie. I just wish those stupid refills weren't so expensive!

  • We have the Safety 1st diaper pail from BRU and I LOVE it.  When we were using disposable diapers, we used regular kitchen garbage bags in it and they fit perfectly - plus were much cheaper than refills for the Genie AND were easier to get b/c I could just pick up a box of garbage bags at the grocery store, Walmart, Target, etc.  Once we started CDing, we got 2 pail liners and they fit nicely in this pail, too.  No stink complaints, either!
  • I have used a diaper champ and love it. Once the kids started eating more solids(like actual adult food), poop diapers go immediately outside to the trash.

  • We used the Diaper Champ because it takes regular trash bags.  We will use the same with this baby.

This is my take on it. DH and I talked about this over lunch today-we will put poo dipes in the garage garbage unless we feel it is too stinky then we plan to move the garbage can to just outside the garage door.  No biggie to us.  You are right-why "store it".

This. Our diaper genie started smelling pretty quickly, and DH hated changing it. The regular trash can ended up being easier, and less smelly.

  • We used a Diaper Champ for both of our girls and never had a problem with it.  We'll use one this time also.

  • We had a diaper genie that we never used. Also had a trash can in the nursery but felt like that smelled right away so we ended up just taking all the diapers out to the trash in the kitchen after every diaper change. The kitchen trash is in it's own little cabinet and never smelled. Plus, we emptied it often. Was not the pain I thought it would be to take each diaper to the kitchen--even in the middle of the night. We live in a ranch style home though also so the bedrooms are right down the hall and not on another floor.

  • I have the diaper champ and I LOVE it! I do home daycare, so I own 3 of them (one for each level of the home) and we use regular garbage cans and just empty it/sanitize it daily.

  • We are using a regular trash can, but we're CD'ing so thats part of the big reason why. My sister uses a diaper genie and when we babysat I loved that thing!

This, exactly. My friend came with me to do my registry and was baffled when I said I didn't want a diaper genie on my registry. lol

  • We started with a regular step-can but quickly switched to the diaper genie. We were living in an apt at the time and bringing it outside frequently wasn't realistic. Now that we're living in a house, bringing it outside every time still isn't realistic for us. The diaper genie really makes a difference as far as the odor and I just make sure we always have several refills on hand.

  • We love our Diaper Genie!  We've been using it since DD was a newborn.  Although I might get rid of this one and get a new one for DS since we've been using this one for so long.... it still works fine but the idea of using one straight for like 5-6 years kinda grosses me out!  But I'd feel the same way if it was a regular garbage can, kwim?

  • Where do you get the Diaper Genie refills?  Do they have them at Sam's?  Just wondering where the cheapest place is to buy them...?
