April 2011 Moms

Mamas who have started solids.

Has your little one had constipation since you started?  Baby boy has been eating oatmeal for a few weeks.  Last week we started adding in veggies and a little bit of fruit.  He really enjoys all the new foods, but has been having terrible constipation - poor baby.  :(  (Also, poor mama - I am SO TIRED of the constant grunting!)

Thanks to Dr. Google I read that pears and peas would help him relieve constipation, so we added those to his diet.  But so far I haven't noticed an improvement.

We are giving him a sippy cup with water with every meal, and he drinks at least an ounce of water at a time - but again, no improvement in his constipation.

Any tips???

Re: Mamas who have started solids.

  • DD was a little constipated this morning so I mixed some prunes in with her oatmeal, worked like a charm. So fast today we have had three bowel movements, no more constipation here.

  • Are you breastfeeding? I read that if moms who are BF-ing eat dried apricots, it relieves their little one's constipation. I know it sounds silly, but I read it in a credible source (I just can't remember which one).

I am breastfeeding!  I will grab some apricots at the store tomorrow.  Thank you!

  • I have not started solids yet. With my oldest daughter prunes was her fav baby food. I just boiled them and blended them.
  • We haven't started solids with Liz yet.  However, when we started with Drew (right around this time) he did get quite constipated.  I took it as a sign that his digestive system wasn't quite ready for solid food and went back to just nursing for a few more weeks.  We tried again just after 6 months, and he had no trouble at all.

That's so weird, because when my pediatrician recommended that I start solids a little earlier than I had expected, she specifically mentioned that most babies experience some constipation, regardless of when you start them.

  • She hasn't gotten constipated at all (but she has only had rice cereal).  But when I was concerned about it in the past, my Pedi suggested we try a little bit of Karo syrup in some water (4 parts water to 1 part syrup).  He says it "gets things moving."  It always worked for us.
