I posted this on 3rd tri but I would love all of the advice I can get!!
We have a dog who is a little over a year old and I am wondering how to go about getting her ready for baby? We have to older children that are 8 and 9 she is used to them. I'm afraid that when baby comes home our dog will try to jump and bite the baby
Re: How are you getting your pets ready for baby?
There are tons of articles and tip sheets out there online about integrating a baby and a dog. I would first talk to your Vet and see if they have any suggestions. A few others to do:
1) Make sure you are putting the stroller, bouncy seat, etc. on the floor and pushing them around NOW, before LO comes home and dog gets used to the movements.
2) When you are in the hospital, try to have DH bring home a blanket and/or hat that the baby wore and let the dog smell it. Put it on the floor and let him or her get used to the scent. If you are only in the hospital a day or two, make sure DH gets i home quickly.
3) When you get home with the baby, you go in the house first, WITHOUT the baby and give a little bit of attention to the dog. Pet him or her, let them smell you, and shower them with love. Then go out and get the baby and bring it in. Continue praising the dog while you are bringing the baby in.
I think it's important to not turn into a "no no no" person, or the dog will continue to try to get attention and do whatever necessary, good or bad.
Good luck!
We just spend a lot of time in the nursery that our dog is used to that room and even likes to sleep under the crib. Im sure it will be a different story when the baby arrives.
Chances are, your dog already knows the baby is coming. Animals are amazing at sensing that.
My cat's been sleeping under the crib.
