When to stop using sleep sack (NOT swaddle one)

We've been using the sleep sack (HALO) and love it--but I can't remember for the life of me when we stopped using it with DS1.  He was also a very late walker and crawler and so trying to do everything we can to encourage DS2 to develop when appropriate and don't want to "over use" it.

Do you guys know when you're supposed to stop using the sleep sack?  He's not swaddled or anything--plenty of room for legs to move around in there and arms are free.

  • We used ours with ds until he was over a year.  I think they can still crawl and move around in them.  Not sure about affecting development though...

  • I think it's when they start pulling themselves up on things to stand, but even then Halo has a early walker sleepsack that you can transition to if necessary. It's ridiculous-looking, but at least you can get away with not using blankets for awhile more.

Oh, and I don't see how they could cause delays. My DS isn't even 5 months old and he's already about 3/4ths of the way to crawling (he already does the mini-pushups, the swimming on his tummy, and pushing up onto his hands and knees). If the sleepsack is delaying him from crawling all around already, I'm GLAD. Haha.

  • I guess I'm not clear on how using a sleep sack would cause a delay in crawling. We only use is for sleep time, not time when he'd be up and moving anyway. I plan to use one until at least 1...longer if he will tolerate it. I think they are just safer than blankets and since DS has no problem with sleeping in one, I see no reason to stop until he doesn't want it anymore.

  • sorry ladies--didn't mean to say that it caused a delay--I know it didn't--I just don't want it to impede his ability to move around more if he wants to.  Like rolling around and such in his crib.  He's a pretty good sleeper at night (THANK GOD--first son was horrible LOL)---so just want to make sure I do what I can to help it continue.

  • DD still used one until she was about 19-20 months old. She could easily crawl and walk in her crib while wearing it. I only stopped because I want her to get used to a regular blanket only, for when we move her to a big kid bed in a month.

  • We used our until around 18m as well and DD took her first steps at 10 1/2 months. We had no issues with it. Our friend's daughter is 28 months and is still in a sleep sack, so you can keep using it as long as they fit in it! My DD could walk, stand up ,etc in her crib in them. I feel like it is safer than a blanket, and when the time came to use a blanket we did the Breathable Baby one.

  • I plan on using one for DD this winter. Never considered it impeding movement.
