If pediatrician is closed, where to go?

I feel like I should already know the answer to this but if your kid is sick on the weekend/holiday when the pediatrician's office is closed where can you take them other than the emergency room? I think my son has an ear infection and I would like to have him checked out tomorrow but I don't think it is serious enough to deal with the emergency room. Are there walk in clinics for this kind of thing? Any recommendations for the Oakton/Vienna/Fairfax area? Thanks

Re: If pediatrician is closed, where to go?

  • your best best would be an urgent care place, I would think.

also, unless you are really in love with your pediatrician, I would suggest trying to find one with weekend hours or at least a doctor who returns calls on the weekends. Our pediatrician (in Falls Church) has Saturday and Sunday morning hours for emergencies (that don't merit an emergency room). I think this is not too uncommon these days.

  • Never mind, I answered my own question. VA Pediatric & Adoloscent Center has a walk in clinic on Sat but is closed on Sunday and Labor Day. I found a walk in clinic across from Fair Oaks mall that is open 365 days a year. I guess I will see how DS does tonight and take him tomorrow if he is still distressed.

  • There's Pediatrics @ Night.  https://www.pedsatnite.com/index.html

It was at Dulles Town Center, but by looking at their website, they've moved to Leesburg.  My SIL has taken her kids there a few times.

  • Just check the Urgent Care facilities near you before you rely on that - we have two that are convenient to our house, but neither take kids under the age of 4 or 5 or something like that.

  • Another option is the CVS Minute Clinic.  Not all stores have the Minute Clinic, but the CVS on 123 in Vienna does.  There is also one at the CVS in Pan Am Shopping Center at Nutley and 29.  I've taken both DD and DS there when I've been fairly certain they had ear infections...it turned out they did and we were able to get meds and get on our way.

  • My phone isn't pulling up all the responses, so someone may have already said this (and, of course, your need has passed), but our pedi recommended Righttime when we had a weekend issue past the pedi's weekend office hours. We were pretty pleased with them. Hope DS feels better!
