DS will read just about anything you give him...He loves books, and quite honestly, his sister is even worse. If she comes to you with a book, she will forcefully climb into her lap and refuse to leave (to the point of doing the limp, dead fish thing) until you read the darn book. Good problem to have, I suppose.
Anyway, we've been reading a lot of "Llama Llama Misses Momma" b/c DS just started preschool. Dr. Seuss is always good, and "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" is a total standby at our house. DS really loves "Three Little Rigs" from our library, and when we go on road trips, I try to pick up educational books (child oriented) that have lots of colorful pictures of wildlife, farm animals, etc. that are interesting to just look at or to read about.
ETA: I also usually take DS with me and tell him he can choose X number of books (sometimes I will also choose a few more), and this usually means that he'll stay interested in the books a little longer b/c he had control over the selections. If I'm choosing them for a road trip, I do spend a little more time reading through them before we leave the library just to make sure they look like something that will actually be worthwhile to tote along. Occasionally, we'll get a dud, but this process, if you will, usually weeds out most of them.
Busytown! We got the first one around Christmas time last year and it was the first book that DS#1 would sit and "read" out loud to himself. Both of my boys love the books and not only are they must have's for bedtime but they get read on their own multiple times a day. If your kid is at all into how things are built, how things work ect he will love them. They have stories about how bread it made, starting from the seeds in the field to the bakers, a house being built from foundation, to plumbing, to walls ect. Unlike "typical" books there is a lot going on on each page, and the pages are huge, so they are perfect car books because DS can figure out/make up stories in his head.
There is also a Busytown Mysteries cartoon series that's really cute, the "kids" from the books are little detectives and go around figuring out the "who, what, why, where" questions of little mysteries. Don't know if you do a DVD in the car but they're darling videos and you can get them on Youtube also. I'm even able to put the youtube videos on my phone for the kids if needed.
DD also loves all of the Llama Llama books, anything Dr. Seuss and Curious George. I got her a Curious George Book and a 5 Little Monkeys book that each have 6 or 7 stories in them and she loves those - great for vacation because they don't take up much room, but have a lot of different stories in them.
DD will love about any book you read to her. Right now, she's into Little Critter books, Llama llama, Pinkalicious and series and some Fancy Nancy early readers plus some Halloween books from the library with The Little Old Woman Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. DS likes The Little Blue Truck; City Dog, Country Frog; Pigeon Wants a Puppy; and ANYTHING to do with cars or trucks or construction equipment. I've heard great things about Interrupting Chicken so it's on the list for Christmas.
