It has started and its terrible!

So my LO is 4 months 1 week old. She has been STTN for some time now- down about 7:30-7:45ish and wakes now at about 6:30...however I was waiting for the 4 month wakeful to start and it did. Last night she got up at 2:15 and wouldnt go back to bed until 4:30!!!! I was dying. To make matters worse she only slept until 5:15 so I had to get up again with her but thankfully this round only lasted 15 minutes and she went back to bed until 7:15. I am exhausted and if this is the wakeful I know this could last some days...She also hasnt even taken a nap yet and its 10:30!!!!!!!!! (and i still have not had my cup of coffee!!)

Re: It has started and its terrible!

  • I hope this doesn't happen to us...I go back to work next week! As soon as I'm doing feeding DD in the morning I HAVE to make my coffee! I know how you feel!

What if you put her to bed a little later? I guess now I'm just wondering what time other people put their LO to bed? I put DD down between 830-9 and she wakes up between 6-6:30. I'm scared if I put her to bed earlier that she will wake up earlier!

  • Yeah, we're on day three of this; has STTN since six weeks, and the last three nights has been waking up at 3:00 and just talking and giggling away; no interest in going back to sleep.  Last night, he FINALLY went to sleep at 4:15, after me rocking him for an hour and 15 minutes (he didn't seem hungry at all, which I'm thankful for, as I'd really rather not introduce a nighttime feeding), and then woke up again at 4:45.  I made DH get up and take care of him that time, since he can fall asleep with him in the rocking chair and I can't.  I kept reading posts about 4 mw and thought "It can't be THAT bad!" BUT, it is.  It's horrible.  Sorry you're going through it too!! Hopefully it's short for both of us! (fingers crossed, knocking on wood, etc.)

  • Ben's still got 2 weeks weeks before he's 4mths, but I'm starting to wonder if he's gearing up for the 4mw.

He was sttn 3-4 days a week and only waking once the other days.  This week he's been up 2-5 times and is up for the day at 5 or so.  Happy as a clam wants to play.

  • This is our daughter.

It isn't that she wants to play really--just wants to be held and rocked. She takes after me and is a restless sleeper, so now that she is scooting (not rolling yet), everything is startling her awake--and then she cries and wants to be rocked and if you put her down she startles herself again and wakes up.

I hope it doesn't get worse!

  • i think DD is starting the 4mw early as well :(  she normally sleeps 11:15pm to 6:30-7:30am, then back down for another 2.5-3 hours.  but just this past week she has been waking at 3:30am.  this screws up my sleep and i've been having a hard time going back to bed.  one night i was up from 3:30am-7:30am..that was a nightmare, and last night i was awake from 3:30am-5:30am while DH and DD were snoozin away. somethings definitely wrong with me!

i hope she gets back to her regular schedule.  tonight i am going to try to put her down earlier (west coast time) and see if we all can get some more sleep.

one more thing....are any of you feeding at this new awake time?  DD is ravenous and i've been nursing her.  yet i'm hoping she doesn't expect to nurse at 3:30am on a regular basis!!

Some experts suggest that the 4 month wakeful period occurs when babies start becoming more alert during the day and therefore get distracted during feedings.  Because they're not taking in as many ounces during the day, they make up for it during the night.  So you should definitely be nursing during the night if she's hungry, but you could try eliminating distractions during the day when nursing to ensure that she fills up!

that makes sense!  she gets distracted by me even...lol.  she'll be nursing then stop and just stare at me for the longest time.  i'll try and think of some ways to keep the distractions at bay.  thanks for the advice :)

We haven't been feeding her. Mostly because as soon as I pick her up, she closes her eyes and falls back asleep. I think since my LO is such a restless sleeper she is startling herself awake and then getting frightened and crying out. Honestly most of the time, she wants her stuffed lamb--when we give it to her she falls asleep instantly (but then it means that I have to stay in her room for about 5-10 minutes until she is fast asleep to take it from her. Not fun at 3am.)

if she didn't seem hungry by rooting and going for the boob when i hold her, i would just shush her as well.  sometimes the whole process (diaper change, nurse, burp) takes 30 minutes and other times i'm in there for an hour...like today.  by that time i'm almost awake!  which doesn't help my insomnia :/
