NBR...found a kitty WWYD?

We found a kitty last night at MILs camped out on her deck. Appears to be well cared for and is a lover and a talker. He is declawed so clearly someones indoor cat. He wont leave and talks to us thru the screen door. He stayed out there overnight even and was waiting for us in the am. We have driven around the neighborhood asking if anyone is missing a kitty...I swear if I dont find his owner he' coming home with me. WW 3rd Tri do?

I would probably put up fliers around there and maybe a 1/2 mile radius or less. After that I may take him/her to the shelter. They might have a microchip embedded under the skin with the owner's info. I wouldn't keep it because 1) Our dog would hate us and 2) It does look like the cat has an owner and I don't want to get attached if the owner finally does materialize.

I would a) take him to a vet to see if he's microchipped - easy and quick way to find the owner. then b) make a post on craigslist pets and lost/found sections asking if anyone is missing a kitty that fits his description. When we found a random dog in our neighborhood a few months ago, I posted the info to CL and was amazed that within hours, we had reunited him with his rightful owner.

I'm a softie though, so I would take the kitty in until his owner was found - I'd be too afraid something would happen to him otherwise, especially with him being declawed and being an indoors cat.

I would get him checked for a chip (either a shelter or vet should be able to do so).

If you can't track down the owner I'd either keep him, find him a home or send him to a shelter. A declawed cat is pretty defenseless outdoors.

the fact that he is declawed is what bothers me most and MIL lives next to a farm with chickens who attract coyotes. this and the fact that its a long weekend and he may be out a couple more days

I am a sucker for strays...SUCKER! But I will tell you I kept a stray after a week of searching for the owners. No one ever claimed her so I kept her. Well, she has turned out to be a wreck. As much as I love cats, and I do still have her, she has ruined a lot of things and she has herpes in her eye and a crazy neurotic scratching condition. As much as I love her (I've had her for 4 years now), I probably should have left well enough alone!

I'd definitely make an effort to find his owner, especially since he seems cared for.

This pretty much happened to me last year. I feed him, brought her the vet for health and micro chip. He did have a chip, but it's wasn't registered to anyone. I got her the meds she needed (had worms) and brought her into our home. I LOVE cats so this was easy for me. I would do the same thing now, even in 3rd Tri.

Take it to a shelter and let them find a new home for it. Sorry, cats are gross.

I'd take it to the vet to get checked out ( make sure it didnt pick up any diseases) and see if they can find the owner by microchip. If not, I'd put up a couple fliers but bring the ktty home (provided it got a clean checkup from the vet).

Go to the vet and have them check if he's chipped - if he is, the problem is solved.

Also, go and check kijiji and craigslist and whatever internet forum you could think of where somebody would post about a missing kitty. Also, check with the humane society (I just wouldn't release him into their care).

The posters and flyers help as well.

I'd put up the fliers with my phone number, and take him home with me in the mean time. Schedule a vet appointment and have them run the gamut on blood work (if you have other cats, you don't want them getting FIV, FLV, or FIP). Keep him sequestered until A) someone claims him or blood work comes back. After a week and no calls, he's mine.

Edit: Just because he's declawed doesn't mean he's wanted. We've taken in a drop off who was spayed (we're assuming they dropped her because she tested positive for the coronavirus [FIP is one strain of this virus]), and one who was declawed (she is ridiculously needy and antisocial to other cats, but loves people and dogs). Living near a farm means lots of drop-offs, no matter the reason.
