Pregnant after IF

Too Much Amniotic Fluid?

I'm kind of freaking out. I went to L&D tonight bc I was having a lot of contractions - more than my normal. My cervix was long and closed and the pattern was not concerning so they didn't even send in the Ffn. However, the Dr on call said I had slightly elevated amniotic fluid - normal is under25, mine was 25.8. The Dr wants me to come back in a week to check again. I Googled - often they find no cause for it but it can be related to all kinds of terrifying fetal abnormalities. It also puts you at a higher risk for complications like placental abruption, etc. It seems pretty rate too. Has anyone had any experience with this?

  • No experience, but I just wanted to send hugs and T&P's your way!!!! Praying that this isn't a direct correlation to anything being wrong, and that your final 10ish weeks are complication free!!

  • Yikes!  I'm sorry you had a scare and had to make an L&D trip.  I know its easier said than done, but try not to worry until your next scan and see what you're dealing with.  In all honesty, the number isn't that much over the high range and could just be a machine calibration/human reading error.

    Hang in there!

  • Step away from Dr. Google!  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's only a slight elevation and that things are perfectly normal!!!

  • I had high fluid the entire second half of my pregnancy. Mine was 39 and everything was fine. You need to quit running to google it will only scare you.

  • It just sounds like it's high normal to me. Besides, it could just be a fluke at this visit, by the next one it may go down. Hang in there.

  • I've been between 21-24 cm since 28 weeks, but I have GD, and the docs guess this is what may be causing it to be on the high side.  My Doc has not been too concerned about it, and that is with me with GD and on insulin.  I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Sorry I can't be more helpful, just wanted you to know that I am sorta in the same boat as you.  Take Care!

Did you mean me? =) No, I did not have GD. They tested me for it a little early due to the fluid level and I passed the 1 hour with flying colors. They couldnt find a cause.... they did a bunch of scans and everything was normal.

Just so you know MANY people get results like yours and it is just an error due to the exact angle of the measurement. My Dr said it is a very common mistake.

  • My friend had a lot of extra fluid and her dr thought her baby may have some kind of problem swallowing, but it turned out to be nothing, everything was fine! Step away from google!

  • Just a lurker not a reg poster but I also had this.  Due to my age, I had ywice weekly NSTs and u/s to measure fluid from wk 32 to 40.  My fluid, like yours, measured slightly above normal several times but varied a lot and multiple appt's it was well within normal range.  Baby is completely healthy and I delivered at 40w6d. If your doc isn't concerned the stay off of Dr. google!  Best wishes !

  • I had it during my 3rd trimester.  It was polyhydramnios.  No idea what caused it but my water level was usually around 25-31.  Our little girl is totally healthy.
