Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Does your LO eat from a plate?

DD, 14 months, still eats everything from right on her tray (if we eat out, I have those disposable mats and put her food right on that). I have been trying to get her used to a plate, but all she does is pick it up and dump it over. I have tried regular plastic toddler plates, non skid plates, and as of today, suction plates and she is even able to pull those off. I tell her no and she just smiles at me and does it anyway. If you LO eats from a plate, how did you teach them not to pick it up?

  • At almost 16 months my DD does the same thing. We use the Bumbo with tray when we go out to eat. She always wants to hold the bowl/plate to her for some reason. Good luck getting it away from her too.

So far we haven't really pushed the subject, we just keep giving it to her in the bowl and when I can get a hold of the bowl I will put her food back in it.

  • LO is 15 months and still eats everything off of a tray.  Currently he is working on using a spoon and fork so to try and have a plate to deal with is just too much.

Once he is better at utensils, then I will work on plates.  I am not sure how yet.  I know when he moves to the toddler room between 16-18 months they will work on plates....so i might ask them what their strategy is.

  • We just put DS in a booster and he sits at the table.  He now doesn't fling his plate.  When he was in the high chair he did.

  • We started using plates and bowls when she started table foods (10-11 months).  We sat with her when she ate and everytime she tried to move the plate we held it in place and told her "no".  She eats all her meals on a plate and the only time she moves it now is when all the food is gone.  She picks it up and either tells us "all done" or "more".

  • DS likes to put food on & off his plate so half and half.  DD didn't actually eat from a plate until much later - can't remember exactly but somewhere around 2 yrs.  DS of course flings his plate & all of food on the floor after a while - love this phase...uggggg!!

  • No, we have not yet mastered the plate. We're still working on not throwing food.

  • She does both.  If i put food on a plate, she'll eat off it.  If I put food on her tray, she'll do that as well.  She's never really tried to pick it up.  But, I attribute that to daycare b/c they eat off plates there.

  • It's a skill that takes time. Just be patient, and your LO will get it eventually.

DS didn't start eating from a plate on a regular basis until he was around 16 or 17 months old. We'd give him one, but he would just dump it. He eventually stopped, and now eats off a plate at every meal and very rarely dumps it anymore. Though it does still happen from time to time. :)

  • He sure does, but didn't start until 22 months. Before then, it was off his high chair tray.

  • It took some time.  I found that the less I put on the plate, the less likely he was to dump it.  Now he only dumps it when he's done.

  • DS eats from a plate. As soon as there is any sort of carry on in the high chair, the meal is over. It's a very effective learning tool that we have only had to use a few times! He rarely tries to climb out of his chair or drops food over the edge and never flings food. We have always used a regular plate too, the same ones we use (they're not expensive!) and I think because of the weight etc it seems less like a toy.

  • DD is almost 18 months and eats from her tray. EVERY time I have given her a plate/bowl she dumps it onto her tray then throws the plate/bowl across the room so I've kinda just given in to skipping the dish-thrwoing part. We'll try when she's a little older and teach her where the plates/bowls are supposed to be. Smile
  • Yup.. she eats from a plate and bowl.  Her bowl is suction and if I get the bottom wet, it's really hard to pull off (for me even).

As soon as I see her pick it up I tell her, "No, no.  Leave your plate alone".

Now her spoon/fork...forget it. She uses it a couple times, then tosses it.

  • Not a plate, a bowl with suction on the bottom, but he does pick it up after awhile and won't let go until he's cleaned it out as much as he is capable. I've taken his bowl away before, so he's learned not to throw it. He uses the spoon/fork a couple of times and then switches hands and holds the spoon/fork and bowl in that hand together. Then he proceeds to shove food in his mouth with his free hand. At least he's trying. He'll get it eventually.
