Sleep After 5am?

So from the very beginning our LO has not been able to go back to sleep after 4/5 in the morning. I thought that once her feeding started to spread out more at night, this would change, but it has not yet. She is now sleeping for 3-4 hour stretches at night. While this is great and I have been able to get some sleep, I am still exhausted. LO tends to wake up for a feeding around 5 every morning. After that feeding she is unable to go back to sleep. Either she falls asleep after she eats, but then wakes up after 20 minutes, or she doesn't go back to sleep at all for like 2 hours (after eating again). So every morning I am up at 5 and I don't get to go back to sleep. It is killing me! Does anyone have any advice for how to get LO out of this habit? Is it something she will grow out of?

TIA!

Re: Sleep After 5am?

  • Are you BF or FF? My LO will do something like this sometimes but if I bring her in bed with us and side nurse her she'll drift off and stay asleep for a while.

  • could just be her internal schedule.  when you feed her at 5am how is the environment?  dark, loud, quiet?  if it is quiet and dark maybe she will return to sleep...have you tried putting her in a bouncy seat and rocking her?  My DD was up at 5:30am and I fed her then I was pumping and she looked wide awake and I didn't think she would sleep.  I put her in the bouncy seat and rocked her and she fell back asleep til 8ish.
  • I hate the 5 am wake up b/c my alarm is set for 6:15, and that means that I don't really get to go back to sleep. But if she does it on the weekend I put her in the swing and even if she doesn't fall all the way back to sleep I can lie down and rest for another 45 minutes or so.

  • DD did this.  She would wake up at 5:45 no matter what time her last feeding was and refuse to go back to sleep.  One day she slept til 6, another 7.  Then a few 8:30s.  Now she's sleep for 3 - 4 hours after her last bottle.  I didn't do anything different, it just happened.  But, it was so frustrating at the time.
