Leaving before LO wakes up

I'm going back to work on Tuesday and I am really lost as far as AM scheduling.

I'm going to need to leave by 7:15 AM and LO usually wakes up a little before 8 AM. Do I wake her up to nurse? Do I just let her have a bottle?

I really, really don't want to give up nursing in the AM. We're basically only nursing 3x a day at this point anyhow (she gets a PM bottle) and I think that would essentially make us wean.

 Any input is appreciated.

Re: Leaving before LO wakes up

  • I went back to work when LO was 6 weeks, shes now 11 weeks and I wasnt waking her to feed but since she STTN she would take a large bottle in the morning and it was stressing me out because I was concerned about the freezer stash.  In the past week, Ive started waking her up at 5:30 when my alarm goes off, feeding her and then getting ready so I can be out the door at 6:30.  Im not as stressed becuase I dont feel like shes "destroying" my freezer anymore, I LOVE our early morning bonnd time and since I wake her to feed her at 5:30, she usually goes back to sleep until 9ish which is great for DH because he works the night shif doesnt get to bed until 1 am-ish. does it mean I have to give myself an extra half hour in the am to make sure she has time to feed, yes, but I love that morning time with her. Do whats best for the two of you.

  • I had the same situation, when I changed jobs in July.  I decided to shift my Lo's schedule and woke her up so I could nurse her.  Now she just wakes up on her own.  For me it was important to continue to nurse her in the mornings, as I didn't want to have to pump for that feeding.  She does go to bed a bit earlier now, but it's not an issue, as I am still able to nurse her the minute I get home, and once again before she goes down for the night.

  • When I went back to work when DD was an infant I would normally leave at 7 and DH wouldn't get her up and take her to my parents until around 8/8:30.  So I would wake her at 6:30 to nurse before I headed out.  My main reason for doing this was because she rejected the bottle so I wanted to load her up for the day until I got there at 3.  Eventually she started to naturally wake up anywhere from 5:30-6:30 and I would nurse her and she would go right back to sleep.

  • Before we started daycare and Daddy stayed home with him, I would still wake him up to nurse before I left.  He always went right back down.  Now, I still wake him up, but it's for the day since we go to daycare now.

  • I go back in a week and I have been trying to figure out what to do.  I will probably wake up at 5am to get myself ready and feed him at 5:30 and be out the door around 6:15 to take him to my mom's house.  This should be interesting to say the least!

  • I leave the house by 6, but daddy doesn't take her to daycare until 7:30.

I wake her up at 5 and feed her, but it's sort of a dreamfeed. She never even opens her eyes, just eats and then falls asleep against my chest and I put her back to bed. DH then wakes her for the day around 7.

  • I went back to work when DD was 7 months and I left the house at 6:45, so I woke her to nurse around 6:15.  She would eat and then go back to sleep.
  • We shifted our LOs schedule to match our work needs, ultimately, given our LO is in daycare. So yeah - I woke him to nurse. Over time, his clock adjusted and he woke up on his own.

    I do this exactly.

  • Thanks ya'll! I was thinking of waking her up right after I shower (while I let my hair dry) and nurse and then seeing if she'll go back down for an hour. I'm going to at least try it.

I also didn't realize that if she's getting the bottles at daycare (one or two will be formula I don't pump anything these days) I can pick up the night nursing again. She normally gets a formula bottle going to bed so we can eliminate that. I don't know why I didn't realize that earlier!

I really appreciate everyone's input. Here's hoping for a smooth transition.

  • On days that DD stays home with her daddy I still wake her at 6 am to feed her. I leave around 6:30/6:45.
