transverse lie- copy from oct 2011 and high risk

I went to the doctor today for my non-stress test and they did a quick sonogram.  He's in a transverse position- head to the left of my stomach and butt to the right.  A few weeks ago at my last fetal weight he was head down.  The doctor discussed the possibility of doing an aversion in a couple weeks if he doesnt turn on his own or the possibility of scheduled c-section.  Not sure what to do?  Has anyone else had an aversion for the those 2+moms? Im a FTM so i'm pretty nervous about this procedure. I also have GD so I have a higher chance of C/S so should i even consider the aversion knowing he may be too big for vaginal delivery? TIA!

Re: transverse lie- copy from oct 2011 and high risk

  • My baby was transverse. My OBs office doesn't do inversions as they deem them too risky so I had a c-section. (4th baby, 1st c/s). If they did I probably would have tried it as I tried everything else under the sun to get him to turn. I went to the chiro for the Webster technique, did spinning babies, moxibustion, swimming, etc. Nothing worked. Fortunately the c/s turned out to be a really incredible experience for me and nothing like what I had feared.

I would read up more on inversions. I've heard so many different things. I've heard it's painful but that some doctors will give you an epidural .I've heard that they sometimes induce you right after so baby doesn't have a chance to turn back. I would talk to your doctor and find out the exact protocol that he uses.

I hope your baby turns on his own, good luck.

  • I had a version attempted on Monday for my breech baby.  It didn't work but I'm glad I tried it anyway.  It was uncomfortable, but not as bad as I was expecting, and more pressure than outright pain.

I had to go in to the hospital and get IV fluids, and then they monitored the baby's heart rate for an hour before the procedure, and did an ultrasound to check his position again.  Then they gave me a medication in my IV to relax the uterine muscles, which has the side effect of making you extremely jittery.  My body and breathing got really shaky and my face felt weird, but  everyone assured me it was a normal side effect of the medicine.

I had two OBs working at the same time, one on the baby's head and one on his butt, trying to turn him.  They took a couple breaks to check his position and heart rate during the procedure.  At the end I thought for sure he had flipped, but it turns out he was just flipping back to his breech position.  Afterward, they monitored him for another hour before discharging me.

It's intense, but not unbearable.  It actually made me laugh, because it kind of tickled and because I was so jittery.  Like I said, I'm glad I gave it a try even though it didn't work.  My LO just really wants to stay in the position he is in, for whatever reason!  I have heard that the version is more successful with a transverse baby than a breech baby, so good luck to you!

  • My baby is in a frank breech position and seems to like it there. I have heard that they can turn around later for second time moms so I am not sure if he will stay or not but I will not do a aversion. In my mind I think that there is a reason that the baby is positioned that way and I will not do anything to force that change. I decided with my doctor that we will wait two weeks for him to turn. She will schedule an ultrasound to make sure that he is still breech and then we will schedule my c-section. In my mind I trust my body and my baby to do what it is supposed to do all by itself and if not then there is a reason for that.

  • DS was in a transverse breech position when I had him in May.  After doing everything I could myself, and a ton of research, I elected to have the C-Section over a manual aversion.  He is my first child, so I don't feel like I missed out on anything.  My birthing experience is my own and my only concern was for him to come into this world safely.

I would suggest you do as much research as possible so that regardless of your decision, you are well informed.

  • I had a successful version for my transverse baby at 41 weeks.  It was very painful but I only had to stop the doctor once.  I'm very glad that I did it and would do it again.  Even though I ended up having a c-section anyway.

  • I wouldnt let the GD and size scare you. My labor buddy was told she was going to have a huge baby due to GD. Her daughter was 7lbs.
