our little guy is into little einsteins and just recently wanted to be called different characters from the show. he rotated through a few names (each lasting a day or so) but the last two weeks he wanted to be called his new favorite character quincy instead of his real name. if we forget he will say 'no my name is not x, it is quincy!'. this is fine by me and we always call him whatever new name he prefers.
however, we just started preschool (two days so far)! he has been having a really hard time adjusting (big separation anxiety) which can be a totally different post. anyways because he refers to himself as quincy and says that is his name his teachers now call him quincy. today his teacher asked if i want to change the name on the school directory and decorations (they line up on a star with their name on it, and also have wall decorations with their name on it) to his new nickname quincy. i said it was a recent phase, so we should just stick with his real given name. however, the teachers still call him by quincy. i think it's kinda funny but i'm worried now if we continue to always call him by this new name it will really turn into a permanent thing and he will always just think of himself as quincy. so should i nip it in the bud and just say at school he is ethan and when he comes home he turns to quincy (i doubt this will work since he always corrects anyone that uses his real name)? what would you do?
Re: nicknames and preschool
Quincy is my daughter's favorite too. We nicknamed our son in utero Quincy so she wouldn't spoil his name. When we knew we were losing him at 21weeks, we HAD to use that as his name.
To answer your question, I would tell him he can be whomever he wants at home, but out in the world, his name is Ethan. I would tell the teachers to call him Ethan and also call him Ethan outside of the house.
