Anyone NOT Treat an Ear Infection w/ Antibiotics?

Carson is on ear infection #3, the first two were treated with antibiotics.  Doc told us to try to wait this one out as many heal on their own, which I'm totally comfortable with as I'd hate to have him on another course of antibiotics.

If you didn't use antibiotics, how long did it take to heal?  Did you do any home remedies, etc?

Re: Anyone NOT Treat an Ear Infection w/ Antibiotics?

  • DD's had two ear infections and we've treated both w/ antibiotics.  I hear you on not wanting to overload the antibiotics, but I also wish you luck in getting through the ear infection without it.  Poor baby and poor you!  Won't his ears just get more painful?  Sorry, I don't know much about not treating them with anitibiotics or how long it takes to get through one without them.

  • I have not had to do this with DC, but with myself.  I would def keep him dosed up on Tylenol or Motrin at all times.  I would also have him re-checked in a few days.  It can get worse instead of better and cause hearing issues.

  • I've heard a trip to the chiropractor can fix an ear infection.  My SIL has done this for both of my nieces.  Might be something to consider??
  • My older DD has had some infections that we didn't treat with meds and I honestly have no clue how long it took as it just went away on its own.  I'm guessing it was just a few days but really have no idea.  We just gave her some tylenol to help with the pain in the first day.

  • Hippy & I think Ready have a way of treating an ear infection with a homeready. I think it was garlic oil or something like that. Found in pill for in the vitamin section and you pierce it witha pin and put a few drops in DC's ear.

Definietly page them. I had it bookmarked, but with the new format, it is missing now.

  • DD has been treated for at least 2 ear infections with antibiotics and I am sure that she has probably had another few that went away on their own. She has never been bothered by the infections and did not have any pain or anything, so I decided not to treat.
  • I double checked and it is gralic oil.
  • My friend has some sort of homeopathic remedy that she swears by.  I can't remember exactly, but it involves garlic (oil?) in her ear.  You could probably google ear infection and garlic.

  • I'm glad you posted this!  We are just getting through ear infection #4 which I'm convinced is actually still the original fluid from the first or 2nd ear infections.

I have also heard about the garlic drops and will probably try them next time around.  Good luck with yours, my pedi is already sending us to a specialist for potential tubes, which I hope the ENT doesn't suggest because I'll probably have to turn him down at this point.  ugh.

  • They usually take about a week to go away without meds.  You can also use olive oil and put a couple drops in each ear & hold a warm washcloth over the ear.  It helps equalize the pressure & reduce pain.

If he gets lots of ear infections, you may want to put him on antibiotics.  A lot of times ear infections get better "on their own" because the ear drum ruptures & releases the pressure.  This builds scar tissue each time it happens, so if it happens a lot, it can cause hearing issues.

  • It is quite reasonable to not treat an ear infection with antibiotics. The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending that in many cases. Many are caused by viruses that would not be treated by antibiotics anyway. Pain control is the key to the treatment however. I would be VERY cautious in putting anything in the ear like garlic oil. If the eardrum is ruptured (which you may not know) foreign substances can cause serious damage to the ear bones and other structures and cause deafness.
