The less places the better! I'll probably register about a month before the shower so I have less chance of having things I register for go clearance or discontinued. I might start my own list right now though.

I will register at the local baby store in my town. They will have certified people install your car seat if you buy from them. Also I will register at earthbaby.com. They have great options. I have heard that Target and Babys R Us have some hard return policies, but who knows. I am starting my list now because me and my husband work 7 days a week long hours from october through January so I want to get a head start. I'll just adjust later when it's closer

We registered at Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby. I also have an Amazon registry that is private - I use it as a list to keep track of things I want/need rather than a wishlist to show other people.
We are only registering at BRU...it is the only store (other than Target/Wal-Mart) that is in both IL and CT (where DH's family lives). Thought about Amazon or myregistry.com but most of my family has internet phobia!

Babies R Us...they have a great selection and they are available online too. I have found that the prices there are really decent and you find the same things at Buy Buy Baby but more expensive. Check out both sites and compare. Also Babies R Us has a reward program for diapers and formula....buy 9 or 10 get 1 free.

We registered at several places (Babies R Us, Target, Buy Buy Baby, Burlington Coat Factory, and a Cloth Diaper website); however, we only listed two on the shower invitiation. I picked two places that I wanted to be my main registry with the majority of items I wanted. The other are pretty much for my family and closest friends, who like to shop at the other stores. On my baby website I listed all of them and described what is registered at each.
My definites are BRU and Amazon. I really want to start a book registry for the baby and register for all of the books I consider classics. Personally, I love giving books as a baby present and I can't wait to start a collection for our baby.
I may do Buy Baby Buy, but locations are probably inconvenient to a lot of people where I live but may be more convenient to where my family lives.
I'm registering at several places- BBB, BRU, PPK, and Target, mainly so I can get the higher end items at a discount upon completion. I've heard of other moms who sign up everywhere just for the discounts as well. You can do this if you like, but only include the main ones your family/friends will most likely shop at.
Boyfriend already has a 2yr old, and I've only met his family once (they don't really like me anyways) so we aren't expecting much more than a few onsies or diapers from them.
Target is just easy, since I know they have plenty in WI and IA where my family and friends live, and they have everything I want to register for anyways. I'm trying to keep it simple.
