How much is LO crying?

I always think Jack cries more than other babies.  Tell me if I'm right.  :(

He cries if he gets hurt, scared or mad, and in the middle of the night when he wakes up which I'm sure is normal.  But he also cries every single time I change his diaper.  He cries like I'm murdering him until I give him a toy to take his mind off it.  He quiets down right away like nothing happened.  He also cries when he's done nursing for some reason.

I think maybe he's just frustrated that I'm making him do something, like he doesn't have the time to have his diaper changed, there are places to explore and things to chew!  Or when he's done eating he is frustrated that he can't get off my lap right frickin' now!

He also throws a breathless fit every time I wipe his face after he's done eating.  ::sigh:: He is very opinionated.

Whats the deal?

Re: How much is LO crying?

  • I don't think Jonny cries that much overall.

He used to cry everytime he fell from getting down after pulling himself up on something, but that only lasted about 2 weeks. Now he's figured out how to get down a little more gracefully on his own.

He cries at about 50% of the time during diapers changes. When he does cry during a diaper change it's because he doesn't want to be on his back at all - he tries to flip over, sit up or crawl away. I try to distract him with a toy, but if that doesn't work I gotta hold him down and he gets mad and cries.

He rarely cries during eating (bottle-fed or solids) or at night/naps.

  • I think that they're just getting little minds of their own!  R screams bloody murder when I wipe his face, and sometimes cries during diaper changes (when he's overtired) but mostly just tries to shimmy away and laughs the whole time!  When he's crawling around on the floor, every time I redirect him, he gives what I call the "Fake Cry", as in Oscar-worthy...the BOO HOO HOO one...sheesh...And he flat out screams like a banshee when he's done eating, until we stuff the paci in his face!!!   Have you had the screaming fit & back arching when putting him in the carseat?  Yeah...that's fun!  LOL

So no, I don't think your LO is crying more than usual!

  • This all sounds very familiar!  Especially the "breathless fit" (love it) over face-wiping.  :)  Elsa is definitely NOT a fan of having her face or hands wiped clean.  Your LO sounds normal to me!

  • Well, this makes me feel better.  He really doesn't cry a lot, just at the times I mentioned, which made me wonder if maybe there was some other issue than him just being frustrated.  Thanks!

  • Yeah, sounds normal to me. G has become very stubborn and independent and cries (and WHINES...dear lord the whining) whenever he's being made to do something he doesnt want to.

  • Like pp said I think what you are going through is normal. Kiya cries when she is ready to get out of her highchair and I am not fast enough and latly she hates it when I wipe her face.  She also gets mad when she is doing something and I pull her away to dress her or change her diaper, it can be a real battle at times.  Overall she is pretty laid back and doesn't cry much only when she wants it now or doesnt want to sit still, I think our babies are finally getting a mind of there own and their little attitudes are starting to come out.

  • O cries for all of those same reasons (except he doesnt often wake at night).  in fact, in addition to crying/screaming, he often tenses his whole body, and shakes his fists at me.  its pretty hilarious.
  • It sounds pretty normal (especially for their age). They're starting to figure out that they have opinions and don't want their diaper changed, how dare you!  And of course, the only way they can communicate with you is crying.

  • William cries over a lot of the things already mentioned--mainly when he's having his diaper changed (wow does he hate that), getting dried off after his bath, when he's over being in his high chair, etc.  He even cries when I sneeze...I honestly don't think it's because he's startled, but I don't know why else.  Anyhow, I guess it's all normal.  I still hate it though, because no matter what, a part of me will always think he's crying because I'm not doing something right.

Oh my goodness this!  B had a major fit last night when DH took him out of his bath that continued all through his diaper change, lotion up, and bedtime dressing.  I was dancing around like a fool trying to distract him and nothing was working - he was just pissed.  I need to do a better job of remembering that sometimes he needs to cry or fuss because that's his main way of communicating displeasure at the moment.

  • Evie cries when I change her diaper (she hates being placed on her back), when I wipe her face, when I take away whatever she's found on the floor (or any other "toy" she cries hardest when its trash), when I try to play with her in the car and she's not in the mood, when she's tired and when she's hungry.  She also had a 2 week period when she hated getting onto the car seat to go home from DC.

  • Also add in: when confined to the car seat, when I redirect her from trying to kill herself on the bricks around our wood burning stove, when I pull her out of the end table (she crawls up onto the lower portion of the end table and gets stuck...), when I don't put food in front of her fast enough, when she's tired as bed time approaches....

H and I call her the drama llama because most of these cries are just fake really whiny ones.

  • Royce cries if he gets hurt or scared.  He will fuss if he's frustrated.  Last night he had a new cry, we still don't know what it was about.  ...I think he was chasing down H and then got so close to him that he just gave up ...its was VERY bizarre.  I told H to pick him up, that its a new cry, just check to make sure he's not hurt.

He HATES to have his face wiped, unless we are in the tub...then he's cool with it.  He gets mad at me if we are done feeding him and he thinks he's still hungry.  Lately though he's been very difficult to feed, its getting annoying.  He tosses and turns and arches, ugh - makes the process sooo much longer and harder.  We (finally) got his high chair down from the attic ...H put it in a stupid place, I couldn't reach it, so it was on him to go get it.  Now it needs to get cleaned, hopefully H did that this morning since he was still in bed when I left with the boys.

  • I actually feel relieved knowing that Jack isn't the only one throwing fits. lol :)  Maybe it's all the pics of smiley babies in our sigs, or the fact that his cousin is the easiest baby ever, but I had started to wonder if I had the only kid who ever cried. haha
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • E is kind of the same way. He's VERY opinionated and throws some really bad temper tantrums. He actually throws his face into the ground or furniture and cries. He HATES getting his diaper changed and getting dressed. And screams at my when I wipe his mouth. He's super high maintenance and clingy.

  • We are dealing with the exact same thing.  I start diaper changes with a toy.  It sort of helps.  I also don't let her roll around, which added shrieking.  Although that's calmed down somewhat since it's every time.

They are getting opinions, and want to explore & do more than they can so they shriek sometimes out of frustration.  It is nice to know that we're all in the same boat though!

  • E cries much less than she used to, thankfully.  She cries when I put her down for a nap and if I put her down too soon after she gets up from a nap (most of the time, I have to hold her for 5 - 10 minutes after a nap).  She also cries if I don't change her diaper fast enough and HATES having her face wiped after eating.  E very rarely cries when she falls (unless she is really hurt), and the only things that seem to scare her enough to provoke a cry right now are loud noises (which sucks, given that we have really loud dogs).  She also cries about random things when she is tired or teething, and she cries anytime she is bored (which is not fun during car rides).

  • Jonny used to always cry while getting his face whiped after meals - but we found that he actually loves getting his hands & face washed in the sink afterwards. I just splash a little water over his hands and face and rub a bit with a washcloth and he thinks it's the funniest thing.

Lol, yes, let's keep it real! Wink But, yeah, I'd say that's a normal amount of crying. Same deal here!
