Potty training and trip

Good morning,

We're going on a family trip that will include a 6 hr. ride each way. DD just started getting the hang of potty training and is now wearing underwear. I'm planning to let her wear pull-ups during the car ride but am debating which type I should buy: cool alert or not.  On one hand, I don't want her to start back feeling comfortable "going" in he diapers (non-cool alert) but on the other hand, I don't want her to realize she's wet (cool alert) and be aggravated during the car ride.  In which case, we would have to keep stopping to change her.  We'll be leaving about 6:00pm and her bedtime is 8:30pm.  She wears diapers/ pull-ups during naps and bedtime.  What would you do?

  • Can you put her in underwear and stop off at a rest stop just before bed, that way the pull-ups are still associated with sleeping?

Not sure if she's going to go to bed at her usual bed time since she'll be in the car.  She might not fall asleep until later, who knows.

  • My DD is day trained and we just put her in diapers for a long car trip.  She wasn't pleased, but we explained that it was a long ride and we didn't know when we could get to the bathroom.  She did not revert back to diapers and was happy to get her underwear back.  I do not suggest putting her in underwear while on a long ride, you don't know the distance between bathrooms and little kids can only hold their pee for so long (and a peed in car seat is the last thing you'll want to deal with).  In any case, if she's day trained already, you'll be hearing a lot from her when she has to pee, has already peed, or pooped (at least, my DD made sure to let us know over and over and over again).

  • Depending on your plans - if you are going to eat dinner first then I would put her in pjs and a daiper right before you leave and call it night time - even if she doesn't sleep to later.  If you are planning on stopping for dinner and she can go an hour or 2 without having an accident I would change her in to pjs and diaper after 1st stop.
