Binky- WWYD?

I posted about this about a week ago, but the problem seemed to be working itself out so I let it go. Well it is back with a vengeance.

Three weeks ago DD started SSTN in that she no longer woke up for a bottle. I would get up a few times a night to give her the binky, which seemed like a step in the right direction.  She will cry out in her sleep and the second I give her the binky she passes back out. Things started to improve and we were down to only one binky pop a night and then one night she went all the way till 5:30 am (from 7:30 pm) without crying out for the binky once.

Well the past few nights the binky pops have increased again.  Last night I think I got up something like 13 times! Each time she immediately falls back asleep, so I don't think she's in pain or hungry or anything like that.

She's 3.5 months old, which to me seems too young to try to ween her off the binky.  I basically trained her to sleep on her own by giving her a binky in the first place.  My process this whole time has been to give her the binky, let her fuss a couple of minutes and then go back in and repop in her binky. If I take the binky away I would basically be doing CIO, which she seems young for still.

WWYD? Wait it out? She is getting better at putting it back in herself (when she can do in her car seat I have seen her do this), but in the crib I don't think she has the ability to look for it and find it herself yet.  Or would you try to ween her off of the binky since it's becoming a prop?  I am almost tempted to try to teach her to be a thumb sucker instead, which I had always been against, but then at least she could sooth herself.

Re: Binky- WWYD?

  • Could you try just soothing her by rubbing her belly and head and things like that?  It'll take longer than the binky, but she'll be learning to self sooth...

A friend of mine has a 2 year old that wakes several times a night for his paci.  If she'd solved the problem when he was three months she'd be much better rested.

If I am still doing this at 2 years old then please check me into the insane asylum, LOL.

Good point about rubbing the belly and head. I always associated the sucking as a good way to sooth, but there are other ways.

  • M does this too. Try the happiest baby on the block technique. When you put the paci in the first time, tug on it like your taking it away, but don't actually take it out. The natural reaction baby will have is to suck harder to keep it in. It improves her sucking skills and keeps binky pop outs down. Also m has been sucking hands so maybe if you let her fuss a bit without binky during the day she will find her hands and self soothe.

  • I have read that if you want a kid to put the soother back in themself, you need to buy 6 or 8 of them and leave them all over the crib.

You could also try one of those stuffed animals with the paci stuck to it, so it's easier to put back in.

If you don't want to be on the paci alert, you kind of have to decide that once it's out, it's done. But honestly... I'm incapable of playing hardball at 3 am.

Those are good ideas! I have like 5 or 6 of them already so I can definitely try that. I also like the idea of the stuffed animal holder. It would be much easier for her to find that and maneuver it in (at least until her fine motor skills get better, which might be soon, but each night feels like a looooong time).

I also hear you about, "Not being able to play hardball at 3 am." It's like each morning I wake up thinking that I need to work on solving this issue, but then I keep taking the easy way out and just popping it back in because it never seems like a good time to start training her away from it!

  • I think it might be something to do with the age because DD is also about 3.5 months and the night waking has gotten ridiculous the last week.  I got up and soothed her 10 times last night, even though she didn't eat.  I'm still doing the paci and also rubbing/shushing each time, mostly for the reasons you stated.  I just don't have the willpower or mental capacity to force the issue at 1/2/3/4/5 am!
