DS has been sleeping in his crib since 6 weeks with no problems. We had issues around the usual growth spurts, but otherwise he has been fine. He would wake up to nurse a few times a night, but would go right back to sleep once he was full.
In the last week or so, he has gone down fine, but about 10 minutes later wakes up screaming. I mean blood curdling, high-pitched screams. We go in and try to shush him or rub his belly, but he escalates and has to be picked up to calm down. Even when I nurse/rock to sleep he does this. It has been a 4 hour long cycle of going down, waking up screaming and doing it all over again until I think he finally exhausts himself around 2 am. Any suggestions?
As far as I can tell he isn't teething and he has generally never had gas issues. I'm in the process of reading No Cry Sleep Solution and have Ferber on my list.
Re: Update: DS wakes up screaming
Have you had him checked for an ear infection?
Yeah, I hadn't planned to sleep train until at least 6 months, if even then. I just can't figure out what is causing this right now - whether it's a sleep issue (4MW?) or something else. I thought maybe we were putting him to bed too late and he was just overtired, but I'm not so sure. He acts 100% normal during the day - he's a happy, smiley kid, so the idea of an ear infection or reflux (he never spits up, but I know there is such a thing as silent reflux) have never crossed my mind. Another thing I just thought of...this evening when he was nursing before bed, he was making this pained moaning sound. I thought maybe his belly was bothering him, so I tried to help him work out any gas. He finally settled down when I switched sides. Not sure if that is indicative of anything. I definitely don't want him to be in pain - I just can't figure out what sort of pain it might be. I'll call the pedi and see if they think he should be seen for an ear infection.
Knock on wood, tonight I put him down, he rolled over to his belly and has been sleeping peacefully ever since. <---I should not have written this sentence because as soon as I did he woke up (DH is with him now, he's not being ignored).
