Another feeding question.... (XP from FB)

...... will i ever feel confident that i am feeding him right, enough and on schedule??

No really:  Ever since we started real food on Sunday (we had been doing rice cereal for three weeks and started sweet potatoes), Miles is not eating much before bed and waking at night.  for example, last night we gave him sweet potatoes at 5 pm last night and then he only took 4 ounces of formula at 8:30.  Then he was up at 2am and took 8 ounces like a starving man.  He eats about the same amount of formula all day as he did before the potatoes except at night.  any ideas, suggestions thoughts or reality checks??  (by reality checks i mean, "hey lady, you have a baby.  sleeping through the night is a thing of the past").

  • When we gave my son rice cereal he had a reaction to it and started waking up at night.  We stopped the rice and switched to oatmeal and he has not had a problem.  He may just not do well with sweet potatoes. Wait a couple of days and try a different veggie or fruit.  You can always try them again at a late point in time.  You could also try feeding him during the day instead of close to bedtime.

I started rice cereal at 5m with DD because she seemed ready to me and pedi said a baby of her size (17.5lbs) could start solids any time. I started slow and did a tablespoon every other night. Then I went to every night. Then I slowly increased the amount to two tbsp. After a week on rice, we tried oatmeal.

Sometime in the last week, she has turned into a different baby. She is SO FUSSY and SO NEEDY all.the.time. I literally can't leave the room. She screams when I put her on the floor, she screams when I put her in her crib, she screams when I put her in her walker, she doesn't go down easy at night like she used to, she's waking often at night when she used to sleep 12 hours straight with no waking. She's just suddenly very unhappy and I can't figure out why, but I'm stopping cereals because that's the only thing I can think of. Maybe her little gastrointestinal system just isn't ready. I've given her sweet potatoes instead the last two nights because there's some actual nutrition there, but there's been no improvement. If she's fussy again tomorrow, I might just go back to EBFing. I know what you're feeling...I don't know if she's bothered by the solids or if she's hungry and needs more. How the heck do we tell?

I don't know what the answer is but I pray to god she doesn't stay like this...it's seriously worse than the newborn phase.

  • To the OP... Two options.

    1. Give a bottle first and then follow about 30-60 minutes later with the solids. He probably won't eat as much of the solids since he just had a bottle, thus not overfilling him. In theory, he would then drink more milk in the evenings eliminating the middle-of-the-night feeding.

    2. Move the solids up to the morning or lunch time. Make evenings for bottles only.

Skio - DS just started doing the same thing over the weekend. I'll lay him down on the floor surrounded by toys so I can go do stuff (wash bottles, make dinner, bathroom, etc). Usually he'd just grab a toy and entertain himself, but now... he just look at me with wide eyes, his bottom lip puffs out and starts to quiver and about two seconds later he cries until I pick him back up.

Around 5/6 months is when the separation anxiety starts up and that's what this little phase sounds like to me. So, like all other phases this too shall pass.
