School-Aged Children

Advice, Ideas for older siblings welcoming a new baby...

I'm verrrry close to delivery our 2nd child!  We have a 6 year old little boy and I am in need of some creative ideas to keep him excited and involved so he doesn't feel left out, etc.  through this whole process.

Here's what we have to do so far:  1.here in the next few days, take him shopping to find something from him to our little girl...2.  get him a disposable camera right before going to the hospital so he can take whatever and how ever many pictures he wants to take at the hospital of the baby, family, etc.

 Anymore ideas?

 TIA!

  • Even though he's 6, I would bring out all of the baby gear now so that he can check it out and you're not telling him to leave it alone once the baby comes.  Let him help as much as he wants with diapering, holding the baby, feeding the baby (all done in a safe manner).  Make sure you praise him for being such a great helper.  I was 6.5 when my sister was born and my parents wouldn't let me do anything!  It was very frustrating and made me resent my baby sister. I was very capable and interested, so if he is interested, be patient and encourage his help as much as possible.  Keep things normal for him.  If you did playdates, trips to the park, and activities before, don't stop b/c life is busier with a baby.  Figure out a way to make it work.  Invest in a good sling/bjorn so that the baby can be "held" by you and you have your hands free to help your DS with what he needs.  Just make sure he's a part of everything instead of an outsider and I think he'll be fine.

  • We made sure that DD1 was presented with a big sister gift from DD2 when she came to the hospital to meet her sister. DD1 was also the one to pick out the homecoming outfit and when we did birth announcments, DD1 designed them with me and the announcment started off "Madison proudly announces the arrival of her little sister Olivia Harlie:"

  • I also have a 6 yr old boy. I took him to the store and let him pick out one thing from the baby section for his soon to be born sister. We call our son "Monkey" so he picked out a stuffed monkey for her. I promised him he could be at the hospital in the waiting room when I had her. He wanted to see her as soon as she was born. He missed 2 days of school so he could be there. He brought the monkey with him and gave it to her. He really liked that and has been great with our 3 month old. He really loves being a big brother. And he had previously told me that if I had any more kids he was gonna move in with his nana. So I was really worried about it. But he's awesome. Good luck to you.
  • DD#1 is 8...# 2 is due in Dec...

    Some things working for us...

    1. she is just plain excited!

    2. recorded babies heartbeat from doppler and built a bear for #1 using it as the sound..she loves to tell people about it and be close to her sister already!

    3. she helped build the registry (yes ettiquete aside, we are being thrown a shower and have NOTHING from #1)

    4.  She is the news breaker to anyone we haven't seen since finding out the sex...
