Supplementing with formula (clicky poll)

So I've had to start using a lactation aid and feeding LO my freezer stash. I got on domperidone today and have been pumping, drinking milkmaid tea and taking fenugreek and blessed thistle but he has ate almost all my freezer stash and I'm going to have to start supplementing with formula tomorrow. I have a couple different samples lying around- what should I use and why? I'm supplementing about 10oz a day.

Re: Supplementing with formula (clicky poll)

  • When I supplemented in the beginning, the LC suggested I use Enfamil A+. I had a few sample cans, and out of them she chose that.

Not sure what difference it makes, or why, but that is what she said. After I used the Enfamil, I opened the similac can that I had and used it for a few bottles before I stopped supplementing but had no problems with it either. HTH :)

  • It really depends on your baby's needs. I have a baby with acid reflux and really sensitive system. She's super gassy and fussy. When I supplement I use Similac Sensitive. If your baby doesn't have any issues then I think you can use what you have and see if LO tolerates it well. I've been supplementing about 8 ounces everyday and she does really well.

Exactly this. She tolerates it really well.

I tried a few different formulas after I stopped breastfeeding. Now, all Sarina gets is Similac Sensitive. Well, actually - the Target brand version of it. She's thriving, and I save a lot of money, and I don't feel guilty any more.

  • Target formula is just as good as any other brand. Go with sensitive if you need to, but we didn't, just straight to regular (for Jack) and he was fine.

  • I don't think we can choose one. You just have to see what works for your little one.  We tried nestle goodstart, and it was fine, we tried kirkland, and it made LO's poo too hard, and now we're on Similac Sensitive (the concentrate cans mostly, but some powder - it helps with his gassiness)

I would try a cheaper version first (walmart or target brand etc) and if your LO takes it well, then awesome.  If not, then move to a more expensive brand. You need to give a formula about a week to see how it goes though.

Maybe I am being optimistic but I am hoping that I don't need to supplement for more than a couple days (if even that- part of me is hoping my supply is already back up enough that I won't need to give him any formula at all).  I'm in Canada too so no Target and I find Walmart too big and inconvenient- I might try the Shoppers Life Brand formula but I may use what I have first because it's free.

  • I have LO eating the organic kind of similac. He chows down on that no problemo.
